Why, God, Do People, God, Pray, God, That You, God...

So, CFS members, why is it that many people, CFS members, frequently use the LORD's name repetitively, CFS members, when they pray, CFS members? It seems, CFS members, that we don't generally speak this way, CFS members, in normal conversations, CFS members, as it would, and is, CFS members, not only distracting but also confusing, CFS members. CFS members, am I missing something here or, CFS members, is there some sort or reason, CFS members, that this happens, CFS members? Any info, CFS members, would be greatly appreciated, CFS members.

(that was even hard to type, CFS members)

That was annoying. Give a real example

You could have just ctrl-c then ctrl-v :p

I suppose to answer your question is:

Colossians 3:17 (KJV)
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

But we're creatures of extremes...

My point, exactly.

???
Could you provide an example? I was not aware that this was occurring.
Maybe it's a Southern thing then. Many of the churches I've attended, especially Baptist or nondenominational, pray aloud in the method above.

For example, "God, we come to you today, God, so that you may lift up our spirits, God, and bring those who don't know you to the light, God. We ask, God, that you help these people, God..."

A statistic I read some years ago: What word is most used in spoken Christian spontaneous prayer?
Do you know the answer?

Out of human habit. It's like the word "um", sometimes we use it to prevent... awkward gaps in our conversation. Nothing is meant by it.

Ok, there must "just" be a lot of uncomfortable pastors here in Florida then. Or at least in the Baptist/nondenom churches. Methodist and Catholic don't seem to suffer from this affliction.

I think that's kind of the issue. We're just throwing God's name out as filler to make a short prayer into a long one.

Everyone I've heard pray does this. It's annoying. I think my prayers are embarrassingly short compared to others that I hear, but I don't see a reason to lengthen them.

I knew exactly what you meant just by reading the title. I can't stand prayers like this. Say what you want to say and then end it with an amen. Don't try to make it longer.

I actually do agree with you. I dislike long prayers also. I've since taken to the practice of allowing myself a few seconds pause when praying to gather my thoughts and thus, Lord, just avoid, Lord, the repetition, Lord, of saying Lord...Lord.

A prayer should be short, IMO. One line from the NLT that I like so much is "When you pray, don't go on babbling like pagans".

The same reason our member Dave Lucas always says ''the King says''. Its an awesome privilege, one that we should all jump on....being able to say the name that is above all names as much as we desire.

We need to / should be able parallel our use of the Lord's name to an unsaved person use of swear words.

Eph 3:12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.

I get annoyed when Shirley Phelps-Roper says "The Lord your God" over and over. It feels like she's taking God's title and using it to beat people over the head. To say that God is lord is obvious and clear but she does it, I think, to say "you better listen to what I'm telling you" rather than "you better listen to what God's telling you".
