Should I keep on asking for forgiveness?

There is a sin that I sometimes fall into (no going to say what it is). It makes me extremely guilty when I am done. I always ask God for forgiveness. But I always fall back into it. Please help me! Should I keep on asking for forgiveness?

Yes...the writer of Hebrews would call this the sin that so easily besets you...I have found in speaking with 100s and 100s of people that the transformation of a person (some slower than others) is miraculous, but that it seems God always leaves one issue that is almost impossible to shed. It is as if the Lord lifts His hand on this one thing (one for you, something different for another). Now maybe it is to keep us humble so we can always know of our dependence on Him....I do not know....but as I see it it is like Paul's "thorn in the flesh" whatever that was...this way NO MAN can say they have no sin on their life, that salvation may be all of grace. Still it is our responsibility to strive as if unto blood to put it away.

What do you think about this understandning?

Now as for praying for forgiveness over and over...God says to, and to confess (if you are contrite and are sincerely trying to be repentant in time it will be cleansed away even though now and then you fail). That which He began in the Spirit He will not end in the flesh. But that does not mean we should not cooperate with the effort of the Spirit and practice yielding to His leading

I don't understand why people don't think that they are evil by nature. It is so obvious.

The answer is yes, yes, 100% yes.

Every sin we commit, we should always regret it and ask God for forgiveness, even if we know that we will fall into the same sin again. The point is recognizing that it is wrong, going to God when we know we've offended Him, and doing our best to not sin again.

We are sinful creatures by nature, whether we want it to be or not. If we apologize for our sins with no intention of changing, then that's a problem. If we apologize for our sins recognizing how wrong it is with the intention to try and stay away from it, then that's where we begin.

It's hard for me, because as a preteen, I don't have a lot of self-control.

Little one, you are so far ahead of so many your age (or even near it) that you must not allow yourself to condemn yourself (or the spirits who may now and again taunt your memory with the past)....there are certain things because God wired us that way (such as issues with sexual attraction) that are way over played in the whole condemnation mentality. When He brought you into the fold and gave you the Spirit (which I discern you have or you would not care about such things) He knew EVERYTHING you would ever do and think (WOW! Scary right?) but He loved you just the same (So much so He sent His Son to be the atonement for all that). So keep striving and at your age at some point or another you are bound top fail once on a while....do your best, trust in God, and know this....you ARE His beloved....He is with you and in you and will raise you up to be exactly who He needs YOU to be in His plan.

When you confess and you can know He forgives you, forgive yourself (thats a hard one) and strive to do well. Do not grow weary in your well doing but sow tot the Spirit and in due season (when it is right in His timing) you will reap.

In His love

Thank God for loving me! :D

It helped me to read these posts, Juk. I'm glad that you started this thread. As old as I am, there are still a couple of areas of sin that I fall into, one of them an addiction that I live to control. I hate that they seem to always be there somewhere, lurking. But running to God and praying, being serious that your choice is with HIM, and always trying to be a good example to all...keep all this in your mind, and keep fighting the good fight. It helps to read the Bible and/or listen to it daily. I particularly like Daniel Whitfield's audio versions on YouTube, as they have different characters and sound effects, like radio dramas of the old days, and I can listen as I work around the house or on my projects. Or plug in and drown out the never-ending flow of bad news coming from the tv my husband watches. May God help you as you exercise your spiritual muscles and grow stronger.

Brother Juk, I am so glad you feel guilty when you sin, as that tells you your conscience is working like it should. It is when we sin, and don't feel guilty we have a major problem. You conscience is very important to you as a Christian, as the Apostle Paul said....

1Ti_1:19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

Heb_13:18 Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.

1Pe_3:16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

If you feel guilty over any type of sin(s), confess it to God and he will cleanse you from all unrighteousness. Recurring sins of the "flesh" are known as, "the sin that so easily besets us..." The only way to strip these from us is to keep our eyes, and heart steadfast on the Lord Jesus Christ, which is also known as "walking in the Spirit."

Gal_5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Dearest JUK,
You are not alone for every single believer has gone through this.
First of all YES each and every time ask Him for forgivness. Never try to hide a sin or wrong doing and do NOT ever be afraid to go to the Father and repent or ask Him forgivness.

Now then, there are a few things you can do that will strengthen you in this area and build you up to where this does not happen any more.
One stay in the word and keep building up your faith by renewing your mind in the written word of God,
Second, This may sound stupid or like a lie but it is truly walking in faith. Start speaking it loud enough that YOU can hear your words. Thank God I am delivered of this. I no longer am a slave to this and it no longer controlls me or gets the best of me.

I know of a lady who was standing on the word of God to stop smoking. Now she truly wanted to stop but seemed to always fall flat and keep smoking. Now she got a hold of what I am saying to you. She began to pray with scriptures that covered her need or situation or to be free of this adiction....

Then she also felt lead to say I am a non smoker when ever the thought hit her and to say this every time she went out to enjoy a smoke. Now to some it sounded like she was lying, BUT she knew God had told her to do so and she did. Now months down the road she realized she had not gone out for a smoke in days. Oh and she also spoke words like I am a non smoker and I did not gain weight and have NO mood swings or withdraws....

Well she has not had a smoke since then, she never gained a single pound or had withdraws or mood swings..... Just as important as repentance is and getting your spirit man built up, your words matter much. It's important that you hear your self saying I am not a slave of this any more for my God has delivered me of this habbit or what ever......

See when a person worries about doing something wrong, they begin to think about it and focus on it until it becomes such a big thought in their head they simply give in and do it.
I know, been there and done that. Juk, this too shal pass for no weapon formed against you shall prosper....
Be at peace Brother........you have already won this victory over it and dont let the devil tell you other wise....I hope this helps

Your post helped me, Jim, because I do tend to over-think, over-analyze, when I shouldn't be thinking about repented sin anymore. I think I will practice the positive affirmations like the lady who quit smoking. Thank you!

This reminded me a funny story of a Christian writer and apologist named Scott Hahn -- he wrote about this in his book Rome Sweet Home. He's a former Presbyterian minister and converted to Catholicism. Not too long after his conversion and being received into the Church, he made a habit of going to confession every 3 weeks.

After about 6 or 7 months of going to confession, he began to get frustrated. In the confessional, he says to the priest, "Father, there's something that's been bothering me about the sins I present in confession."
The priest says, "What has been bothering you?"
Scott says, "Every time I come to confession, I've been presenting the same sins each time. I keep falling into the same disobeying God the same exact way."
The priest snickers and responds back to Scott, "Well, what do you want--NEW sins???"

Loved it....! Also the devil really goes out of his way to tempt the followers of Jesus....he does all he can to amplify your guilt....he will do whatever he can to get you to stop running the race set before you...

The very fact you recognize sin shows that the Holy Spirit is within you. Paul, who wrote so many books of the New Testament, understood this. He wrote is Romans 7:15 & 16:

For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.16But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. (NASB)

This is much better than someone that does consider the concept of sin as applying to him.

All of us have sin in our lives that we need to fight. In 1 Corinthians 10:13, Paul wrote:

No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.(NASB)

So the answer to continuing to pray is that Yes, confess your sin to God, and understand that all your sin has been forgiven on the basis of Christ’s sacrifice. This is the forgiveness you received when you accepted Christ into your life. Ask God for the grace today to face the temptation today. Do not dwell on the sins you have already confessed.

If you have confessed all sin the Holy Spirit has laid on your heart, any guilty thoughts come from the deceiver (Satan).

I heard that God has given us the ability to resist sin by not thinking of the sin and the results of it, because that will definitely get us to sin.
