Hearing God?

Hello everyone,

I would like to know how many of you hear from God on a very regular basis...even as often as thorough out the day, and are certain that it is Him speaking? If any of you have an open dialogue with Him where you speak and He speaks back to you the way friends in person do? I am under the assumption that this type of close intimate relationship is possible and I want that probably more than anything else. Am I wrong in believing that this is indeed possible?

There have only been a few times where I am absolutely certain I have heard from God. There have been many times that I am quite certain I have heard from God, but there are many more where I just don't know if it's God or not. This is where my problem is. Is there something that is hindering me hearing Him, is He speaking and I just don't recognize it, does He just not choose to speak to me often? I am confused about this....any insight would be greatly appreciated.

What you are talking about is completely possible and many believers enjoy that relationship with God---and it is what we are called to. It should be normal.

Spending time with God alone, or "closeted" is important if one wants to hear from Him. He trains us to know His voice so that when He speaks no matter where we are or what we are doing, we know His voice and hear Him.

I have done what you suggested and I hardly ever hear from Him in those times. I talk to Him in those times and stop and keep quiet for a time to just listen, but most times I feel like I am wasting my time doing this because He doesn't speak back. Most of the time I feel like it is a one way conversation and I run out of things to say, so I stop praying. I get frustrated by it sometimes. Do I just need to keep at it and be more disciplined? Why is it so difficult?

He also speaks through the written word---amazingly.

When I spend time with God, I just talk to Him like I would talk to my best friend, and husband, or children---openly, informally, and frankly. He always speaks back. You "hear" it in your spirit, and most people discover that that spirit is located in the solar plexus region of our physical bodies. Maybe just take the time to discover this for yourself. Be patient, because God sure is...and He has never stopped speaking...you just have to train your spiritual ears to pick Him up!

I heard that if you punch someone in their solar plexus, you can punch the wind out of them.

Well I never hear him speak directly but I absolutely see him working in my life. There are many times recently when things simply become overwhelming for me, I am going through a rough patch at the moment, and I will talk with God and ask him to please help guide me through whatever is going on and almost out of the blue something happens that I did not expect and pulls me through.

I swear it is like he is throwing me over his shoulder and carrying me through these rough patches I go through and that to me is just as good as talking.

God speaks to me through his Word in the Bible, thats one of his ways. Are you reading it regularly? He might be prodding you to read more, cos a lot of it is Him speaking to you, like hes already said, He doesnt need to say again, and got it written down for you. if you not reading the Bible Hes not gonna keep repeating himself over and over.

Yes, He does speak to me regularly through the word. I do know this is one of the ways that He speaks. I do read the bible daily or very nearly so. I also see Him working in my life as well.

The thing that I am seeking for though is that direct back and forth communication that one would get while talking to a close friend.

I also can't understand why I hear from Him clearly sometimes and other times it's like I can't hear from Him. It seems to happen often when I feel I really need an answer from Him on what to do, and I need to make a decision by a certain time.

Euphemia,

You mentioned that he always answers back when you talk to Him...how can you tell that it is Him speaking, and how did you come to recognize that is was Him?

That is one of the major problems that I have....not knowing for sure if it Him speaking or not.

I have a feeling that if God wants to speak directly to you that he will make sure you know its him.
I highly doubt he would leave it up to you to guess about.

See, that is what confuses me then Spooky. If what you say is true then that means that God speaks to me infrequently became that is about as often as I am certain that He is speaking to me.

Predominantly through His Word.. And sometimes through circumstances.. And sometimes through others who are closely associated with me.. I have never had experience of hearing audible voice.. I have never sought after it.. God speaks me through His Word and have never had felt a need to experience something beyond this..

I have never heard and audible voice either...that is one picked up by my ears. I did once hear a clear voice in my head though. I asked God in my mind what the words meant and received an answer after a little while.

The main ways God speaks to me(where I know it's Him)is through a "knowing" or through revelation.

And one more thing.. Every time we see God spoke to someone in audible voice in Bible, there was no doubts on who was speaking. It was so clear and obvious. And it was not norm, but exceptions. God choose individuals to accomplish His will for the nation of Israel..

Amen to that!

The primary way God speaks to his children is through the "inward witness" by the Holy Spirit.

Rom 8:14.. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Rom 8:16.. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Then we have these scriptures that tell us the way God leads us.....

Pro 20:27..
The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
Psa 18:28..
For thou (God) wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.

The Lord speaks directly to man's spirit, not to his mind, or any part of man's physical senses. The Lord by His Spirit enlightens us in our spirit to guide and lead us to where he wants to go or what he wants us to know. It is called the "inward witness".

Another Scripture that help is.......

2Co 4:16.. For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

Our spirit is the "inward man" and he is being "renewed" day by day. The Lord God is always enlightening our spirit by His Spirit every single day. In other words the Lord guides us all the time!! You must know these things and believe them before this will become a reality in your life, they just don't happen automatically. Learn these scriptures and confess them out your mouth ever single day, and thank the Lord that you know his voice and you follow him.

Many times we might think the Lord is speaking to us, when it is actually our own mind speaking. The only way to become absolutely sure it is the Lord, and not our own mind is by "renewing" our mind with the Word of God. Why is this so important is because only the Word of God can "separate" our soul, from our spirit, and our physical flesh. It very easy to know the difference between God speaking to you or you own mind is after you have renewed your mind. Of course this is not done over night, and takes time to do. But as you do you will begin to discern God's voice from your own.

Heb 4:12.. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

That is one of the major problems that I have....not knowing for sure if it Him speaking or not.

Let me tell you of one instance...

I had gone through a terrible ordeal lasting about 5 years dealing with the rejection of our family by our youngest daughter, for no reason. I went through a period of very heavy grief, and took to my bed in depression. My husband would sit by my bedside and regularly read the Psalms to me while I cried, and was generally useless, I thought. I would imagine myself climbing up into God's lap and His hands enveloping me in comfort, but I continued in this grief mode for a long time, and couldn't even bring myself to go to church or to my cell group. Over time I began to learn to deal with things and there was a reconciliation with our daughter (that was fleeting). During the better time, I sat here one day and said to God, "Lord, I am so sorry that I was so faithless toward you." Immediately I felt/heard Him speak to me, "Oh, but I am pleased with your faith." I was so taken aback by it, and knew it was Him because I surely wasn't thinking it! I asked Him, "How can you be pleased with my faith with the way I've been acting out?" He responded with a picture in my mind of me climbing up in His lap, seeking His comforting embrace. That was good enough for me!

I knew it was God, and the way He said it was familiar, and my spirit responded to it as it should to the voice of God.

God finds a way to commune with His dear children! We just need to be open to it.

Thank you very much for that. It gives me something to ponder and consider.

Thank you for relating that experience to me. It touched my heart.
