Fantasy and Faith

Please elaborate, I do not know of very major theological issues that go against scripture that Lewis had.

If a christian wants to write fiction, he can do so and honor God. Just like a Christian can play a secular football game and honor God.

Surely what the world lacks and is in the greatest need of is reality ;not fantasy.

Actually that is not truly known. He wrote things but was not serving God or walking in His ways - so to claim christian writer is not so wise. One of many truths about cf lewis
http://mikeduran.com/2007/08/how-“christian”-was-cs-lewis-and-why-is-he-an-evangelical-hero/
From that link:
1. He believed in purgatory.
2. He believed in evolution.
3. Tolerant of mythology and paganism
4. He believed in prayers for the dead.
5. He believed in a type of “soft universalism.

I found this link and others on him very interesting. It seems that he never professed to be Catholic but many of his beliefs lined up with the RCC.

We can't mud sling him pushing point 3 by accusing him of arriving at Catholic beliefs. So 1 and 4 are irrelevant. It is interesting that he believed that without coming under Catholic teaching. Point 2 is nonsense http://creation.com/cs-lewis-and-evolution.

Point 5 is silly. Saying what he did does not warrant attaching him to the word universalist. There is no such thing as ''soft'' universalism. It is simply a case of him acknowledging that God looks beyond a Christian church for hearts after His.

And see that's the thing my stories are very influenced by tolkien. The world and mythos i created is in a completely different world than our own. And i know i am saved i just think of the verse where it talks about brothers of weaker faith. That's why i want to put that note in the beginning saying i am not condoning the real practice with the occult, that this book is for entertainment only.

My dear friend. There is no such thing as ....."this book is for entertainment only".

The occult is withchcraft and witchcraft no matter how you frame it it Satanic and dangereous.

Please do your self a great justice and read and dig into the Word of God which tells all of us in Deuteronomy 18:9-14................
"“When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you,you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations.
10 There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer 1
11 or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord.
12 And I because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.
13 You shall be blameless before the Lord your God,
14 for these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to fortune-tellers and to diviners. But as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do this."

This is NOT a suggestion but instead it is a COMMAND.

I take it that you did not teach your kids about Santa Claus and the tooth fairy?

I don't completely disagree with you Jim. We must watch our thoughts. But I believe you are straining a gnat.

God has us thinking on angels, an unknown universe awaiting and miracles that defy the laws of physics. I think if anything, the bible is to blame for instilling fantasy and magic into society.

KingJ.........I would say that the Bible responded to the false and demonic practices already being done and therefore is a study guide against what is wrong and harmful to us.

Notice Deut. 18:9 closely..........
"When thou are come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations".

The occult, demonic worship practices were already entrenched in the physic of man and God in HIs Bible said.........."DO NOT DO WHAT THEY DO".

A belief in angels and supernatural miracles is the norm? Perhaps one day my statement will be nonsense. But not today ;).

I agree with your thought. We must keep our eys on the Lord Jesus Christ at all times !

I believe in Angels but I do not believe they have an earthly ministry today neither do they save us.

I believe in miracles but miracles do not save us either.
They can show forth the power of God BUT they can also be copied by Satan so as to deceive even the very elect if that was possible.

Only the shed blood of Jesus Christ is acceptable!!!!

As does anybody depending on what side of the fence you're on. Lutherans say that Baptists have gaping holes in their theology, Methodists say that assemblies of God churches have gaping holes in their theology, and vise versa. But on the Gospel, we all agree that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior and it is our Christian duty to spread the Gospel

Now, I agree with Lewis more often than not, his writings show evidence that he was a very grounded man who studied the word of God. Whether or not you agree with everything he says, he did spread the gospel with the means he was gifted with i.e writing. He conveyed the gospel through the narnia series as Jesus conveyed the Gospel in a parable.
Can some people take the narnia series and turn them into something they are not? Yes, as with any other fantasy.
Can some people take the bible and turn it into something it is not? Yes, look at Mormonism and Jehovah's witness, they both use the same bible as us, and are not preaching the same gospel that is the true gospel.

Excellent Klub.

(I'm still new to this forum so i apologize in advance if this is in the wrong section)

I'm a bit of a nerd/geek. I love Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and Star Wars and so on. I know there's a bit of a disagreement on things like LotR and Harry Potter and it is something i prayed about awhile ago for a time but i do not feel a conviction when watching or reading these things. I know that Christ warns us about sorcery and the occult not to practice it but i understand that these films are fictional and to me i feel no guilt in watching them.

Now i have been working on a fantasy story for a long time and eventually wish for it to be published. I do however feel in this context that i should put some sort of foreword in the beginning of the book stating that as a believer in Christ i want to emphasize that i am not trying to promote the occult or entice readers into practicing it. I would also add that this book is merely fictional and is in no way supposed to be taken as anything other than entertainment.

My fantasy story does involve magic and the such but it is also not used as an allegory or metaphor like the lion the witch and the wardrobe was by Mr. Lewis.

What are your thoughts on this? Like i said i don't feel any moral conviction about it but i want to put that word of warning at the beginning.
I am just thinking that you shouldn't need to put a warning on it. People should be able to read it and know it is a fantasy. If you feel obligated to put a warning on it, then you feel obligated to put a warning on it... for a reason?

I agree with this. I think we are just not agreeing on where to draw the line.

It is not fantasy that upsets God. It is the evil practices, serving another god and leading people astray.

What are your thoughts on Lord of the rings, Narnia and Harry Potter?

God's reality is our fantasy :barefoot:.

"Gods reality is our fantasy"

That makes no sense whatso ever .
For the reality of God is not a fantasy .
and to act in the light of the reality of God is not fantasy either .

Well obviously not to us. We touch God's reality more and more everyday. But before you knew God as well as you do....what did you think of angels, demons, talking snakes, talking bushes, talking donkeys, dragons and the four horseman of the apocalypse?

Surely what the world lacks and is in the greatest need of is reality ;not fantasy.

And I never said it needed fantasy, but if the fantasy/fiction book being wrote successfully communicates a Christian message without undermining biblical standards, what wrong has the author committed?

What is nonsense was your last sentence:

I think if anything, the bible is to blame for instilling fantasy and magic into society.

Satan and evil men are to blame.

Jeremiah 17:9
“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
and desperately wicked.
Who really knows how bad it is?

Well obviously not to us. We touch God's reality more and more everyday. But before you knew God as well as you do....what did you think of angels, demons, talking snakes, talking bushes, talking donkeys, dragons and the four horseman of the apocalypse?

Before I ever knew of these things---I was a child, and when I heard and read of them, my mind and heart reckoned them as truth. Fantasy doesn't enter into it.

I agree with this. I think we are just not agreeing on where to draw the line.

What are your thoughts on Lord of the rings, Narnia and Harry Potter?

What do I think???? Remember now that YOU asked ME. I must tell you brother that I am real, real old fashioned, even to a fault.
I was and still am to some extent involved in the teaching of "What Cults Are" and "How To Recognize Deception".

IMO humble opinion.......Lord of the rings, Narnia and Harry Potter all speak to and draw attention to "Witchcraft".

I base that on the fact that the first thing a anyone interested in OCCULTISM and or WITCHCRAFT is that there is a “force.”
IT is the same thing that was focused on by George Lucas in the Star Wars movies.

The “force” has two sides and can be controlled by magic spells, words, potions, incantations, rope magic, rings, amulets, and so on. Occultists and Witches believe that there is good witchcraft and bad witchcraft, and the good always triumphs over evil! Witches also teach that battles are fought in the Middle Earth and in the astral plane causing upheavals both above and below. Thus, witches emphasize that good must triumph over evil, but it is all witchcraft.

Many, and I mean many people try to substantiate their feelings on these books and movies by saying that the good magic always trumps the bad so then the good magic must then be GOOD. NO!!!! It is all witchcraft, and the good that these professing Christians are defending is witchcraft which is strictly forbidden in Deuteronomy 18:9-14.

Now then, remember that the number “13” is the coven number in the occult. Do not take my word on this stuff.......look it up!!!!
It is not a secret and is actually very easy to find now that we have the internet. I had to learn the hard and long way.

Back in Dec. 2001, “Focus on the Family” promoted a book in their magazine. The book being promoted is titled, "Finding God in the Lord of the Rings". Guess what the asking price was for that book? $ 13.00!!! Coincidence????

The Lord of the Rings trilogy was the work of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien as most people know, but you may not know this.......... He his writing during the midnight hours, and he worked for 12 years and released his story in the 13th year. Coincidence????

Here is something else interesting. The 1st Lord of the Rings movie was released on December 19, 2001.
The 2nd movie was “The Two Towers” and was released December 18, 2002.
The 3rd one is named “The Return of the King” and was released December 17, 2003.
All 3 were released in sequence.......17-18-19 th. of December. Coincidence????

Actually all three movies were released at the time of the witchcraft sabat of Yule!

As for Narnia........Tolkien, was devout Catholic and converted his colleague C.S. Lewis and they spent much time with each other at the Oxford pub or tavern. They claimed to have “kindred spirits” hence the appearance of like writings and characters.

WHO KNEW?

Leviticus 20:27 - A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood [shall be] upon them.

Leviticus 20:6 - And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people

I spent most of my life up to my eyeballs in LOTR, Star Wars, Alien, and every kind of sci-fi and horror book/movie you can think of.
I say repent, get it and any other Hollywood filth out of your home.

It is also similar to playing a video game like Skyrim. I might play a character who uses magic, but I know it is not real. Would I really use magic in real life? No.

Suppose I play a racing game like need for speed where you can race down a street at 100mph. Would I do this in real life? No.

So why if one thing that we say would be wrong to do in a "fantasy" world and yet something else be acceptable? If you shouldn't do something in a fictional realm does it automatically make it a sin? It would be wrong for me to race down the street at that speed in real life but I don't think majority of people would have an issue with that in a game. But playing a character that uses magic is something I wouldn't do in real life but why is it condemned in a fictional game whereas the racing is not?
