Bodily Exercise

'For bodily exercise profiteth little:
but godliness is profitable unto all things,
having promise of the life that now is,
and of that which is to come.'

(1Tim. 4:8)

Hi there,

I don't know whether this is the right part of the forum to enter this, but I don't know where else to put it.

There is constant emphasis being placed on the need for physical exercise, in the media, by government initiatives and so on. Exercising the body is important for our physical well-being, yes, but it is being taken to excess I feel.

The verse above brings sanity to the whole issue of bodily exercise, doesn't it? Would it not be wonderful if the same emphasis could be placed on the profitability of 'godliness'?

:)

"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."

- 1 Timothy 4:8 (NIV).

-1 Timothy 4:8 (KJV).

Yes, you are very right. I guess we as Christian brothers and sisters know the promise that your quoted scripture brings "having promise of the life that now is, AND of that which is to come". I love how Paul emphasises how important it is to train spiritually - it is always a great reminder for myself! :)

I will say that exercise is probably a good thing to maintain the 'temple'; I know i need a lot more of it especially sitting in a car and behind a computer all day....

But looking at the emphasis our present culture puts on 'exercise' is just a mere facade and excuse for the same old sins of lust and pride. Tell me any 'normal' guy (or gal) walking into 'Any Gym USA' doesn't get an eyeball full of something they like to see? I mean come on; the "clothes" that people wear to workout in? You might as well be naked because there isn't much left to the imagination.

How about those 'uniforms' in the Olympics?

If acts like the world, if it feels like the world, if it LOOKS like the world....

"Be ye Holy; for I am Holy." Jesus Christ

Hello Complete ,
We as believers are actually commanded to do so. I mean build up the spirit man, to exercise the spirit man daily.

I once heard a pastor share something the Lord showed him in prayer.
He saw all these well taken care of people (bodies) And then God showed him the problem with far to many believers today.....

God showed him the spirit man as well. He said they looked like these stick figures with Big Heads. God showed him how these are undeveloped spirit man and not capable of standing, persevering or fulfilling His call on their lives.

We need our spirit man built up making Arnold Schwarzenegger look puny.

Sadly though believers simply fill themselves with head knowledge that is little to no use in the things of God but do impress themselves.

Blessings

Good thoughts and post! I couldn't agree more with you :)
Abundant kingdom blessings to you

I think that we are supposed to take good care of our bodies, since they are the only ones we have and God gave them to us.

1 Corinthians 6:19: Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

I don't think we have enough emphasis on physical activity, particularly in the US. More than 2/3 of adults are now overweight or obese, which is terrible for longevity. We can't do God's work if we are dead.......especially if we're dead from our own lifestyle choices!

In my thoughts I think that part of problem in today's world...is all of the processed food, and all of the companies that are messing with our food (gmo) trying to make something God created better in their opinions (like non- organic corn being more lIke bug repellent than food). And the fact that farmers are under so much pressure to make a buck that they cannot allow the land to rest like God instructed. I pray that our next president will give our food back to American farmers, and make it easier on them, and take it out of the hands of other countries.

It's so very sad to see so many people that have (some by choice) to put in such long hours at work or working 2 jobs...and then have no time to cook good healthy meals for their families.

And if they happen to desire to buy organic food...then it's quite a bit higher (if they don't have access to a farmers market) and most families don't have the extra money to budget for the price difference.

Until a few years ago when I had to cut out most sugar from my diet, did I realize how much sugar or more prevalent....high fructose corn syrup....is in almost every food available. It really is sad. And is another part of our obesity problem.

Our bodies were not made to ingest all the stuff that it's in our food today.

The truth is that for me, after two knee surgeries, one knee replacement and a couple of other operations is that if someone tells me to ......
"run for your life", I am dead.

What the scripture actually tries to highlight is that there is little profit/benefits/advantages of doing exercise as far as your body is concerned.. However, you don't overdo to the extent of forsaking your spiritual nourishment which is infact godliness itself, profiteth the spirit a great deal. Reading the word, exercise your spirit in prayer and pursuit of all righteousness is the important aspect of any christian life.

I hear you saying that no matter how much you exercise your body and take care of it, the body will die.
However, the spirit which goes on is the thing that needs to be exercised and taken care of as it is eternal.

Good stuff Mr. Wenceslaus.

Reminds me of this verse

Ecclesiastes 7:18 - pay attention to these instructions, for anyone who fears God will avoid both extremes

While physical exercise is important and necessary, it cannot be taken to extreme. I think we as society should look addressing root cause of the problem rather than cure for the symptoms. Exercise should be supplemented with good diet and other healthy habits. Is everyone actually getting enough sleep? Is the diet healthy? Is the lifestyle healthy? There are so many other aspects to healthy lifestyle and exercise is one of them.

In the Biblical days athletes were exalted as gods, honored and revered by the populace. He could have possibly...possibly been drawing a comparison between the worship of the human body as opposed to worshipping God through obedience.
Gee, I'm so glad we don't worship sports or athletes anymore. ;)

Athletes train hard and discipline themselves to achieve their goal and this goal is good for the human body.

Now then how much better is it when we apply the same principle unto the training and building up the spirit man.........

Blessings

At the moment I exercise about 1 hr 30 minutes a day - 5 days a week. 40 minutes of that are spent on a treadmill at high speed mostly running.
By the time I am done I am sweaty.

Ladies and gents, I wouldn't trade this for anything. Exercise gets your mind in working order. Ideas, thoughts come to you.

About 2.5 months ago I was out of shape, lethargic and just plain lazy. When I got home in the evenings it was a gargantuan
task putting dinner together, often I would stop by the TV and sleep there. I would eat very carby (carbs) meals for dinner.

I still am eating a bit too carby, and need to work on that. But the exercise has a way of balancing you out when you overeat.

Now, I work like a rocket. Constantly at it. Sleep is balanced, skin has done amazing things.

So exercise really is beneficial whilst you are on earth.

I agree that exercise is beneficial, and I applaud your efforts, and am glad that you are now reaping the rewards of such efforts. There has to be balance doesn't there?

In the epistles 'doctrine' is balanced with 'practice', and so it is in the natural. It is no good hearing the principles related to keeping healthy and of a sound mind, if we do not couple it with practice. Similarly with the inner man, we know that it needs to be fed on the written word of God, and worked out in daily living, for it to be seen by others and rejoiced in by those who bear the same indwelling Holy Spirit, by the grace of God, in and through Christ Jesus our risen and glorified Lord and Saviour.

Praise God!
