Wisdom

The bible refers to Wisdom as a "she".

Proverbs: 1
Wisdom Calls Aloud
20Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
21She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

I understand how to pray, etc., but do we speak to Wisdom as well as the HS and Jesus? The bible clearly states Wisdom is a living spirit since it refers to Wisdom as a She. She is someone, she is a spirit.

I just find this interesting and welcome your thoughts.

:( What can I say now?
Yes, outnumbered again! :D

Wisdom is often referred to as a woman. But so are ships called she and they, like "wisdom", have no gender. I think the writer of Proverbs 1. where we see this. uses it in the descriptive sense.

But just adding that although we complement each other..women and men are different. (Thank God for that!) To refer to wisdom as a woman, etc..seems appropriate to me as men are often mentioned as strong, etc. The thing is, whether male or female, to pray for wisdom as we all need it. :) .

Thanks, Sandpiper. Completely understand what you are saying. I guess I am looking for more detail in this area.
The bible clearly says She stands at the doorway calling out. Whether male or female, I guess my question is, is Wisdom a spirit that is alive just like the HS? That kind of sounds like a stupid question when I say it out loud. lol

I am not sure how to say what I am wanting to know.

Wisdom is like compassion... it's a spiritual attribute, that is actually part of the Godhead. Its something that if we enbrace her... she will compliment us and work very well for us. She has soft complimenting qualities, gentle and kind and a true helpmate to the Holy Spirit. They are like a couple... truly one in nature. For we cannot be actively listening to the Holy Spirit without accepting and acting upon wisdom as well.

Definitely not stupid! It's deep in my opinion

Hi coffeedrinker,

Wisdom is not a Spirit which has a personality as does the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a person, God the Father is a person, and Jesus is a person. But Wisdom is not a person. I see Wisdom as an attribute of an understanding heart. Actually to have wisdom means to have understanding. And understanding means much more than mere reasoning or knowledge. It is a quality, a habit, an attribute and sometimes a gift enabled by God's grace..like in a Word of Wisdom.

However, wisdom is sometimes depicted as a woman as in Proverbs. Wisdom is not a woman since Wisdom is not a person even though wisdom can be and is often depicted as a woman.

In the book, "The Shack" by William P. Young, which was recently made into a movie, a woman appears who is called "Wisdom" I think because that word represents what she has to share and questions she has to ask. I think the writer was trying to convey about the understanding Mack (the main character) needed to learn by presenting a conversation between the woman named wisdom and Mack. And in that story Mack needed to gain an understanding heart as he was full of bitterness, hurt, and hate as he refused to forgive the person who had kidnapped and killed his little girl. This state of mind was bringing him into great sorrow, depression, disbelief, and despair. He needed a change of heart mainly for his own spiritual, emotional, and physical health as well as so he could be strong for his own family during this crisis time of loss and pain for them. He was simply stuck and lacked the needed understanding to overcome.

I think we gain wisdom as we grow spiritually and that we should be praying for wisdom especially if we know that sometimes we lack it. But it is a quality we learn with time and experience and, of course, growing in understanding and application of the Word of God in our lives. We sometimes need to ask God to give us an understanding heart (wisdom) as King Solomon did in 1 Kings 3:7 & 9a.

" Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet I am but a little child, I do not know how to go out or come in... So give Your servant an understanding heart..." "

Sure hope this helps. Bless you.

I find this a truly interesting question.

My answer (I believe) would be that wisdom is compared to a woman by our Lord because she is to be courted like a woman, like someone you are to love and pursue with your whole heart, mind, soul and strength. That having been said, who does this make "her." Ultimately it makes her our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, as the One who wants to be pursued, not just do all the pursuing.

I'm fairly satisfied with that answer, and that's straight off the cuff. But strike me dead if our Lord doesn't particularly like me calling Him a woman. :ROFLMAO:

Revelation 1:4 (KJV)
John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

Isaiah 11:2 (KJV)
And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

Hmmm...

P.S. In Hebrew, all nouns have a gender, like Spanish. Therefore, Wisdom is feminine. But if you study the seven Spirits, you'll see they are all Jesus.

Revelation 5:6 (KJV)
And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

For God is One. A way to look at this is that in Hebrew, the word for face is always plural "faces". This is because our faces change with our emotions reflecting a state. Everything about God mearly a reflection of a state, though He is never changing. How's that for understanding. Our faces change, but we are still who we are. Just a thought.

Hidden in Him :
It disturbs me to read your last sentence.
I'm sure you don't mean what you have written, so please don't say it.

Bless you indeed.

What? The part about me comparing Him to a woman, or the part about Him striking me dead? *laughing*

Don't worry in either case, Smiler. He's much bigger than to be offended by such words, and if I were to be so lucky as to go on to be with My Lord I'd be overjoyed. But I was just joking, so please don't worry (unless you too were joking, in which case worry all you want). :)

Well the gramatics is the reason. Except in some cases where there are personal pronouns, English does not use grammatical gender which is the classifying of words as masculine, feminine, or neuter.

But Proverbs which is written in Hebrew does use grammatical gender. Just as does Spanish, French, German and many more. Herein is our problem. So in the grammatical sense, “She,” as we understand it, is not necessarily “she” as it was intended in Hebrew.

So then in the English, the word wisdom is grammatically neuter, but not so in Hebrew. The word in the original Hebrew is chokmoth, and it is grammatically feminine. In Hebrew, it would have been natural to speak of wisdom as a “she.”

He was not joking, I can assure you. And contrary to your Thinking... words matter very much to the Father. Words are like containers, so whatever you say will come to pass, and opens the door for the enemy to harass you.
