I will not let you go without blessing me

This is Jacob's prayer. "I will not let you go unless you bless me" Genesis 32:26.

Jacob wrestled with God and said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me". God did bless him, but he held on and wrestled with God until He received it.
How many times do we hold on and then in an instant we just let go because we do not get an answer? I am guilty of this over and over again.
The HS brought this to my attention this week, and I believe it was from God letting me know directly that I need to hold on. It's okay to remind God that I am not going to let go until I receive a blessing from Him.

I used to think it was wrong to beg God and demand blessings. It's not so much demanding as it is reminding God what He has already spoken and what He has already done. I need the Lord and I need to hang on for dear life and not give up on my blessings, we all do. What if our blessing was to come the very next day, but today we are tired and we just give up and walk away.

How do we wrestle with God? Is this wrong? I believe God brought me to this knowledge so I can RECEIVE.

Your thoughts??

I look at things differently. God has physically and spiritually saved my life. Too many people get caught up in the things of this world. This world is nothing more than a proving ground for the building up of our faith. I am not going to make demands on God, He's already done more than I deserve. When I pray, I pray specifically but always end my prayer with by Your will not mine, in Jesus name. Whatever the answer, however long it takes, I believe God has heard my prayer (petition) and I accept His decision, because He knows best. Whatever His will is, I'm fine with that. He knows the big picture. He sees the future and knows the past. His will is what I seek.

So many Scriptures point to one walking in faith to receive what has already been promised and set aside for our lives 2 peter 1:3-4 is one that the Holy Spirit is bringing to my mind, along with Mark 11:23-24.

I believe God desires for us to put Him in remembrance of His Word nd to speak His Words as our own, along with trusting Him completely ... but I don't think wrestling with Him is necessary. It's a matter of being obedient to his commands and He will manifest Himself in our lives (John 14:21). Keeping that close intimate relationship with Him so that we are knowing what He desires for us to do at all times. There is a reason why we have health and prosperity... it's to help Him to meet the needs of the people in His kingdom. The Blessing of Abraham was not just for himself, but also for whomever God instructed him to bless.

Key things to remember
Jacob was not a born again person.
We are.

We never demand our way especially with God.
We use His word by Faith. We speak His word by Faith. We pray His Word by faith.

If we today are found to be wrestling with God it tends to be us either trying to convince God of something or resisting what we know we should do.

Blessings

Just be sure the enemy does not slide in there and get you thinking something is not Gods will for you .

That's why I depend on the Holy Spirit to help me discern between truth and untruth. I cannot rely upon my own understanding because I've been a Roman Catholic, Agnostic, Evangelical, Reformed Calvinist, and now a non-Denomination Christian. Sometimes theology of one belief creeps into another, that's why I rely on the Holy Spirit. He corrects me when I'm wrong, or makes me correctable by others.

I would never demand or argue with God. I am saying not giving up on your asking / believing... stay strong and keep on asking / believing / having faith until you receive your answers. Many times we give up when our miracles are right there....
What you're saying is Biblical. No argument from me. What I'm saying I usually (not always) pray once about a subject, believe God has heard my prayer, and trust Him to answer that prayer in the best way possible. Example: when one of my Pomeranians was paralyzed from the neck down, I prayed for his complete healing and absolutely believed God heard my prayer. I asked for his complete healing and 10 more years for him. I received what I asked for from God. I watched God heal him over the next nine months to a year.

There was a series on tv in the uk showing people who went into hospital and followed them as they
were treated and after when they went home.
A woman was shown, with a friend. They both has disabilities, one who had been bullied and abused
and lost trust in people and the other who saw the value in others, and if it helped would persistently
offer friendship.

It struck me some situations, to respond differently to them will require persistence and sacrifice.
We call on God to do the miraculous, but how much are we prepared to put in, in showing love to
others. People are so short sighted, and can be very demanding, yet it is like things are their right,
and not something flowing from grace and mercy.

I was always impressed by Moses and Aaron, speaking sense about judgement on the sinful people
in Israel, and mitigating it. Seeing when thing really matter, drives us to our knees, and the Lord listens.
Amen, glory to His name.

You know, God treats each of us as individuals.

I think God knew the nature of Jacob and understood that only by agreeing to the wrestling would Jacob properly value the blessing. Something easily obtained is often less valued.

God could, of course prevail in any conceivable test, but was 'recruiting' a patriarch. God had chosen Jacob, but Jacob had to be impressed with the magnitude of the calling.

God is sovereign and may accept a challenge for our good, or ignore/decline and there is nothing to be done about it, but accept.

Tenacity can be a wonderful asset in life. Stuborness can be as large of a stumbling block. Stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit to tell the difference.

One must very wise in this. One must know when to draw the line between Faith and Begging.

If one truly believes God herd them and All His promises are yes and Amen, then why would you keep asking as if He has not herd you?
Blessings

Not to turn this thread to another subject but...

Does anyone else see any significance with naming Jacob 'Israel' and thus giving that name, which refers to the striving with God to a nation which God refers to as an obstinate and rebellious lot?

Hmm, maybe it is not so much a departure on this thread when we considering our own wrestling with God.

I was never one for long , fancy prayers. If I suffer from a toothache, I would say “God?——it’s the tooth.” He already knows what the problem is. However........lol......I always found the parable in Luke 11 very intriguing. It appears that Jesus is saying that God will sometimes give in to persistent prayer just so you will quit bugging Him.Is my take on this parable correct?

Thank you for this post... it definitely spoke to me... the persistence and sacrifice. i know God calls me for more and i am so lazy and lack discipline.
your comment is a reminder.... i need more structure and i need to stop being so lazy. thank you.

Prayer

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.[b]’
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Perhaps I should start another thread on this ,but I have heard several preachers say that in this Age of Grace we are already forgiven and that is to be the motive for forgiving others. If God can forgive a wretched one like me, I should have no problem forgiving others.

Dear brothers and sisters;

I'm blessed by the many good teaching points from everyone in CoffeeDrinker's thread. I'd like to share my confession. I have demanded and argued with God many times even after all the discipleship I received. I feel its a huge part of our relationship with God.

In a relationship with God and with each other its not sugar coating, walking on eggshells and saying the right thing. Thats not a relationship even with God, but with God He teaches us that He is indeed, the Almighty.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7 ESV

How many times do we fall short with this wonderful scripture? We are still men and woman with flaws and imperfections that will expose our behavior not in the highest respect of God. How many times do we fall short in our respect for others, our marriages and kids?

I LOVE our Father and shout Lord, Lord every moment and everyday, however, in our relationship with Christ we're going to have those moments in life when we have high Spirits, emotions and flesh, battling with anger, frustration, heartaches and may not agree with God and why we have to endure patience and waiting, instead of instant gratification of one's situation. Those times I feel it may be my own underlying motive.

I recently took a Bible study class and the text we used was called A Course In Miracles, by Helen Schucman, Bill Thetford, and Ken Wapnick, Foundation For Inner Peace. What spoke to me was a Quote from the book, "What is temptation but a wish to make the wrong decision on what you would learn, and have an outcome that you do not want?"

Many times I had to catch myself because after presenting my arguments and demands, for not speaking with God out of reverence. I am grateful God understands me better than I understand myself, and takes His LOVING time to correct and show me His way.

How have I learned from this? My demands and arguments, my way, always fall short of my expectations until I'm finally exhausted, let go and get down on my knees and surrender, surrender and surrender again to my Lord and Savior. I go into prayer asking God to forgive me when my approach and attitude is wrong, to help me understand my circumstances and grow in my relationship with Him, and this is when God brings me into the light, revealing my attitude, again and again.

This has been going on for years with me and now, as I've gotten older, with His LOVE and correction, I have learned, slowly, to go to our God in a growing relationship, and in my prayers, just talk with God but now with more reverence and humbled humility.

At times I have to clean the mud off my shirt before He will take me forward with His outcome, which is always better.

Today, when I present my argument to God, the term argument is used in a different context. Its not an argument of demand, disrespect or faulting God, but presenting "my case" and requests that will glorify His purpose, His will be done. If God doesn't reveal my case argument, He still does whats best for our circumstances.

My relationship today, with God has grown and improved, slowly but surely, and I'm a very happy and grateful man. But the lessons, well, I don't believe we as Christians will ever master in our assigned lifetime. In many ways, that is a relief. Let God remain the Master.

God bless you all and your families.

I understand 100% what you are saying. Thank you for your post. I appreciate it.

Hmm well I think back to when before I was saved I was wrestling with God about some issues but thankfully God won out and I had to surrender and say yes God you are right all the time! Lol but I did not let go of Him till he blessed me as I needed His blessing desperately.

So if you find yourslf wrestling or struggling with a certain issue you dont quite trust God with...learn to surrender!

Mine was, well what are all these scientists going on about evolution then? Is that true or is God true? Well God put me right about that, men can lie but God cant. I spent months trying to figure out that one and researching everything I could about it and before realising those scientists arent God and are only guessing at how He made everything and so they tried to make up their own billions of years story. But their theory was full of holes. So everytime I read something that goes well humans had apes ancestors millions of years ago when we climbed trees and had tails but now we are evolved I laugh.

How do we wrestle with God? Is this wrong? I believe God brought me to this knowledge so I can RECEIVE.

Your thoughts??

My wrestling with God lasted about a week. I had read the Bible and truly believed that The Word had saved me. BUT, giving my life to Jesus, that was a BIG thing.

I've never been a person who makes false promises to anyone. I know what it's like to be constantly let down.

So I hummed and ha'ed, and thought about it, and thought about it some more. And then my heart was changed. I was given a dream where I was flying with Jesus. He had a good hold on me!, but we were flying through the sky. I felt safe and loved and happy and saved. More than I had felt during my entire life. And I knew that I truly wanted to give my life to Him.

And I did.

It may sound a bit bonkers, but I truly do believe that God reaches us as individuals. Everyone's experience may be different. But we all get there in the end.

Blessings to all XXX
