Think tank

Get the grandkids to drive you like we do......……..Believe that and I have a bridge in the Sahara to sell you.
Our oldest is 9, who we probably need to wait a while. My dad passed away at 87. He was still driving, but we were getting close to the "take the keys" moment. I am glad he did not live to see that day, because it would have killed him. It was a ritual. Wake up and drive to his favorite Cuban deli. Buy cafe con leche and Cuban bread. Drive to the park and feed the ducks. Drive to the cemetery and, as he put it, gossip with mom. Drive back to the same Cuban deli and buy dinner. Then drive home and spend the rest of the day watching TV. He always heated his dinner in the microwave for 2.30 mins and stayed up watching TV to the wee hours of the morning.

Shall we call it Amerigo instead.

I had wondered why the United Kingdom called itself that instead of the United Queendom (since Queen Elizabeth is on the throne) and if it was really United, then whats the deal with Ireland being a separate country from Northern Ireland?!

Then theres this whole business with Brexit. I mean come on, you say you are united or in a european union and then you dont want to be. Makes absolutely perfect sense?

I think...all the countries ought to have new names to reflect the people that live there. If we are going to change them then might as well change them all. Except New Zealand of course, its already New.

If its just him could he not just drive one of those mobilty scooters? You dont need a huge car to get around if you dont take any passengers.

Good history, Ray! I was in grade school when I learned about Amerigo Vespucci. Why our country was named America, is a long story and another discussion.
Who wants to give that history lesson?
I will give you our one if you give me yours. Before New Zealand was named by the dutch, it was known to Maori as 'the land of the Long White Cloud' because, when they saw first saw it from their waka (canoes) thats all they could see...
In Maori language this is Aotearoa.
But many english people often cant pronounce Maori so they just call it new zillun. Americans call it Noo Zeelan

In holland it was Sealand orignally, not sure where the z came from, but, we are kinda stuck with it.

Another name that many christians called it was Godzone. Like the promised Land, it was like paradise, although only on sunny days. The rest of the time when it rained Paradise was somewhat elusive.

My think tank idea also to do with aucklands traffic problems, is perhaps instead of a fuel tax for aucklanders that, if we are going by car we can special fuel cards that calculate the amount of fuel we spend and some of that will go to improving transport, roads and infrastructure. We have hop cards for the bus, ferry and train and its all integrated so why not include parking and fuel on that same card.

Because the roads and rail are costing billions of dollars to put in, where is that money going to come from? At the moment its debt and that means furture generarions, the ratepayers are going to shoulder that burden making it more expensive to live here. I dont know if that means gas stations would allbecome council owned/operated, but certainly they make so much profit the least they could do is help out with the roading.

That way people can have some idea of how the roads are being used, how frequently and how much mileage people are putting in. My last count of number of gas stations on the main feeder road to the motorway in my area is 6 on one stretch, 3 on each side.

There seems to be only one electiric charge bay. And there are 4 car washes.

Who discovered it then? Surely God already knew about it before anyone else.
Yes, I am pretty sure He did. Well, the indigenous people (Indians) were here first and came here from Asia. They you got the Vikings. Christopher Columbus took credit for discovering the new world, but Amerigo Vespucci was first (after the Vikings) and gets the country named after him. But it came in parts. Many people discovered parts. Ponce de Leon discovered Florida, Leif Ericson discovers New England . . . and so on.

Well, he is no longer on this earth, but just don't see an older guy on one of those things. You have to deal with rain, heat, and one call could end it all.

Oh true. But there are enclosed ones like golf carts. At retirement villages they have a village van that runs the oldies around. And theres a franchise called driving Miss Daisy, named after the movie about a chauffeur that was an elderly ladies driver.

You will just have to get used to other people driving you when you get older. Plus public transport is FREE for senior citizens, so, theres no excuse really.

Yea I dont know how people can say they were the first to discover anything or the first to climb a mountain because who knows maybe someone else did but just didnt tell anyone. Sir edmund hillary probably wasnt the first to climb mt everest surely the sherpas would have climbed it first living the closest to it but just didnt feel the need to brag about it.

Since I am a disabled vet, public transportation is free now. If I were to us it to get to the office now, I would have to (1) drive to the bus stop (which is about 3 miles away), (2) take a bus to the metro station (which is about 12 miles), and (3) take the train (another 10 miles). So, I'd have to leave the house about two hours earlier. If it's okay, I'll just drive for a while longer.

Its ok but why do you live so far away? Just wondering. Can you not work from home or live closer to where you work.

I think zoning laws dont make sense...urban planners have mucked this up that why we have so many problems now from stuff they didnt think about years ago.

Lke why would industry just chuck all their waste directly into streams and rivers? Why arent there restrictions on waste? There ought to be a rule that you use everything you can on site so theres no waste of materials. Or you give it to someone who can use it, not just dump it somewhere.

Ok, I work in a major city. There is no space of suitable family housing in cities. Basically, its kind of like New York; no one lives in the city but commute from the purbs). I work as an internal affairs investigator for our school district (4th largest in the US, with over 40,000 employees, 390,000 students, and over 800 schools). So, while I do go to the office to write reports and coordinate new investigations, most of my days are spent traveling to various schools or administrative buildings.

So the question of why I do not live close to the city is simple:

Dont families live there, then who actually lives in the city?
Single people with no family, students?

Surely there are schools IN the suburbs, not in the central city if no families live there. Why have your office in the city then, makes no sense. Just have a mobile office. When I gardened all over the city, one company had a depot but it was close to my home, and the other company had no office it was actually in another town, we just had all our meetings at one of the villages or just talked about stuff in the ute. We had teams for each territory, I was based out west. I hated commuting to the north or into town because its just made no economic sense to do that.

One girl, for another garden company said she would drive all the way from east to do a job out west, and the wages hardly covered the cost of petrol. I made a stipulation that it had to be worthwhile and the jobs be based locally cos no way was I sepnding hours just getting to and from work every single day.

If I worked a full time job and it was town, I moved closer. I did that when I moved to my brothers. There are inner city subrubs that are less than 20 minutes bus ride. You dont have to be right in town living above your office. But you can rent a place if you really wanted to and a lot of them were actually decent villas that can house a family.

Thats a lie that nobody lives in New York city because my cousin does, he lives near wall street. And he had a family, although only one son. They lived in an apartment and I dont think it was bad when I visited. They actually had nice apartments there. Some People actually do live in cities. They have parks where you can play, you can walk to school, and you have restaurants and shops you can walk to. Its just noiser, but the city is not just office blocks and slums.
