To Reign with Christ

I have previously posted a conjecture that in heaven we will not have a long vacation perusing what makes us happy but have some joyous task to do in service to the Lord. One way of considering the life of a Christian is training in following the Lord and keeping one’s thoughts and deeds dedicated to that approach to life in preparation for our long term or eternal tasks in the kingdom.

In the parable of the talents (Matthew 26:14-30) , the master rewarded his servants who did well with what the master had entrusted with authority over more of the masters affairs.

In 2 Timothy 2:12, Revelation 5:10 and Revelation 20:6 we are told that we will reign with Christ.

So what does it mean to reign?

The dictionary indicates that to reign is to wield sovereign authority.

We will have a task to do, and we will have the authority of Christ to accomplish it.

But, over who will we have authority? Those around us will also be co-reigners. Will it be His angels?

A wonderful thought my brother.

My 1st thought is that eternity is a long time. Iam thinking it my be difficult to calculate how long we praise God before we go to work but then again I am thinking with my mind.

Then in Rev. 1:5-6 we see that...…..
"Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen."

It has been my understanding that this Scripture was written to the Church. This same language is also seen in Rev. 5:9-10 which is the so-called Song of the Redeemed. The church is in view there as well it seems to me.

It is also my understanding that the Tribulation martyrs will serve the Lord in His Temple in Rev. 7:14-15. That is a priestly role and they aren’t ever referred to as kings in the Revelation.

Rev. 20:6 says that they will be priests of God and will reign with Him, but only the Church is given the status of royalty as seen in 1 Peter 2:9 and granted a seat at the Lord’s side on His Throne according to Ephesians 2:6.

Therefore, it seems to me that both groups will assist the Lord in His eternal rule, each according to its assigned role. Personally, I am absolutely overjoyed that today I am a member of the Church of God and waiting to be gathered up to Christ to be with Him forever...…...AMEN?????????

Hi Major!, Reading and meditating on your posts brings many blessings!

My comment at the last about ruling over the angels was not really random. It may be the result of staying home too long!

My mind is making connections and remembering short digression during a sermon where my pastor mentioned a passage in one of the Gospels where at the birth of Jesus the angels were excited and straining to see what God was doing. I wish I could either remember the words or the reference, but to further my supposing, could it be that since Christ’s followers would reign with Him, the angels were watching to see who their over-seers would be.

I can remember when the leadership was changing in the companies for which I worked. My co-workers and I were always extremely interested in who the company was placing in charge of our projects!

This is only a supposition built on a conjecture, so no one should take it as teaching, but it is interesting, at least to me.

Will it be His angels?
That does appear to be the case.

"For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking." (Heb. 2:5)

In the world to come believers reign with Chirst. Since the angels even now are not in charged but subject to Christ, it follows that when we are co-rulers with Christ we would also rule over the angels.

Moreover since believers are to judge the angels (1 Cor. 6:3) that certainly demonstrates believers will have authority over them.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Continuing the meditation, knowing that I am imagining far in advance of facts:

When I look at the how men have reigned on earth it occurs that the nature of ruling in the kingdom will be much different. In the world of men, people, even the Christians are an obstinate lot and the rule of even the best of men is fundamentally coercive. In the Lords kingdom, the necessity of coercion will be gone and the population being governed will have the same goals.

I know that in life, although I advanced technically, I never advanced in management beyond team lead, though at times I performed teaching skills to enable others to do what I did. I think my companies were probably right in not putting me in management. In the kingdom, I will need guidance to do my part.

This makes me anticipate even more being raised perfected. Just as we can see that a perfect screwdriver would make a poor hammer, being perfected here does not mean unerringly perfect for all tasks but each made able to reliably perform his particular task while not necessarily able to perform the task of another.

I believe that we will retain individuality and each exhibit specific abilities according to our specific place in the kingdom. These will be built upon a foundation of faith that we have developed this life. Where one has not yet grown much when they are changed they will still have the kernel of Truth that led them to the Lord.

So, it would then behoove us to prepare as much we can for the task. We must always strive to hear and do what the Lord asks, both in individual was and as co-members of the body of Christ.

I am not sure what that Scriptures was he spoke of were. Does Luke 2:13-14 sound familiar………...
"Suddenly, a multitude of the Heavenly Army appeared with the angel, praising God by saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to people who enjoy his favor!”

Then what about Lu.1: 11-17 ...…...…
“And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zachariah saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, ‘Fear not, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son. And you shall call his name John. And you shall have joy and gladness and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And many of the children of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

As for your thought on...…"could it be that since Christ's followers would reign with Him, the angels were watching to see who their over seers would be".

I have no clue brother, but I would not think that would be the case.

IMO, I thing the angels were chosen by God because God wanted witnesses, supernatural ones.

God says in his word that a fact is established by two or three witnesses.

So God sent supernatural witnesses, his angels to testify to this supernatural event.

I agree. It seems to me that we as humans want to give angels more respect than maybe they are due.

I think you are correct.

1 Corinthians 13:12-13 validate your thought...….
"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity."

They are still holy beings of heaven, which is a place yet to come for us in Christ. Therefore I pray even for the angels in heaven.
For I am still in my human flesh, and not made as the angels (Mathew 22:30).

Sorry, I left out some things.

The Greek word for "holy" is ἅγιος. The phrase "holy angels" is used only 3 times in the N.T. (see Mark 8:38; Luke 9:26; Rev. 14:10). The plural form (i.e. ἅγιοι) is used of believers (i.e. translated the "saints") ca. 60 times in the N.T.

I would take the attribute 'holy' to be a comparative term, except when applied to God Himself. A holy being is one that more closely conforms to the Lord's purpose than another. If taken as an concrete attribute, there is none holy except the Father, Son, and Spirit.

As a comparative term the word ἅγιος, as it relates to angels and human beings, are the ones who "more closely conforms to the Lord's purpose." I completely agree 100%.

Holiness, as it relates to God, is a divine attribute. It is his essence\nature.

Agreed. The one's in heaven are as I thought I stated; maybe I should have been clearer. Yes, I am very familiar with the Greek being it was force fed to me from infancy in the Greek Orthodox church. As an adult I can still agree with a lot of those teachings.

I have chanting stuck in my head from my earliest memories of studying the bible on Saturdays and Sundays in Greek school, without much of a break.
Back at age 19, my family could never understand why I married an American (Lord rest his soul). I have simple answers.

Peace out~ as this is certainly a conversation for the men.

er...I would think we rule over the earth meaning what was originally designated Adam and Eves role before they fell..look after all the animals and plants etc.

Not each other. Anyone who thinks we are going to lord it over one another must be joking! There is only one Lord - Lord Jesus Christ.
