Still Growing

Anyone who watched TV in the 80s might remember all those family sit coms, including GRowing Pains.
Well I found this autobiography/memoir about one of thr stars Kirk Cameron, who played Mike Seaver, one of the teens on the show. He became was a huge star, literally a teen idol at the time when he was only 16.

In the book he writes about that time and also how he became a born again christian. Interesting book.
It may go to show that one shouldnt be afraid of inviting someone to church, you plant a seed. But I think it was more his mum praying for him.

He later went on to star in some christian movies, as well as presenting some christian evangelism on tv. Hes got six children, four of whom are adopted.

The interesting thing is, one of his moveis Left Behind (i have not ever seen) he said nobody in the cast was a christian except for him and his wife. Well, I suppose it was trying to copy what was in the books.

His sister Candace was also a teen star in the sitcom Full House, and a christian. There arent that many TV or movie stars that are open about their faith. I guess because it limits the roles they can play on screen?

Hi Lanolin;

Yes, I remember Growing Pains and Kirk Cameron. In 2010 we purchased the movie Fireproof about a man and woman's struggling marriage and how they both came to Christ. The movie was produced by Sherwood Pictures, which is a ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. Great movie and I still enjoy watching it from time to time.

His sister Candace is doing clean television movies and currently appears in a tuna commercial starring Charlie the tuna. lol!

There are Christians in the entertainment business and to be honest are limited in work because of our faith. But this does not stop God from revealing His only Begotten Son. One movie alone can reach the world for Christ. The Left Behind movie series and The Passion of Christ are excellent examples.

God bless you and your family.

They have taken few other movies as well. All of them are pretty good. The most recent one is War Room. It is really nice to see a movie focused just on power of prayers!

I just finished reading Candace Cameron Bure's book called 'Kindness is the new Classy'
I didn't know she is now starring in 'Fuller House' which carries on from where 'Full House' left off but years later. She's now married with 3 children so took a break from acting to look after her children, but now she's back on screen as DJ Tanner. She's also on a talk show called 'The View' although I've never seen it.

My sister used to always watch talk shows. Oprah, Sally Jessy Raphael, Donahue. They usually had them everyday on daytime tv so in school holidays we would watch Oprah give stuff away and Sally Jessy do makeovers, and Donahue, I think by the time he was on we were a bit talkshowed out.

Candace shares about her faith journey and how kindness is really important, I suppose on a talk show they like a bit of conflict and fighting, but it's not her way and she has to stand up to that.

And her mother wrote a book too about raising two tv stars. While also being a Christian.

I don't watch much tv now. I don't have netflix. I don't make much time for tv, if I do want to watch something, usually it will be something I can play on DVD whenever I have spare time.

I watched a lot as a child only because my older sister watched it, and her being older she got to choose the channels. I don't think I ever had a choice in the matter! If she was watching Neighbours, everyone had to watch Neighbours...five times a week!

Its interesting thinking how much we followed our older siblings without question. In the Full House sitcom, I didn't relate to DJ, or her ditzy friend. I related to the middle sister (forgot her name) played by Jodi Sweetin. She always had great one-liners and come-backs.
Michelle, the youngest, played by the Olsen Twins, was definitely the cutest but probably got the lions share of attention from everyone.

In the US, we can relate this with Jan, from "The Brady Bunch".

Marcia Marcia Marcia!

The actress who played Marcia actually wrote her own memoir, I recall she did get into drugs, like most Kokaine Kids of the Hollywood generation.
Her name is Maureen McCormick. The memoir is called 'Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding my True Voice.

I don't know if the actress who played Jan wrote one...!

Its good to know that, i think celebrities should be more open about their faith.
Hello Prycejosh1987;

Jim Caviezel who portrayed Jesus in the movie, The Passion of the Christ, openly shared about his faith as you suggest.

Instead of fear of being "black balled" in Hollywood, he still received work in his acting profession and has spoken at many Christian events.

Another actor, Bruce Marchiano, portrayed Jesus in the movie, Matthew, and Acts, where every word for word was from the Book of Matthew and Acts, both NIV translations. Bruce worked on producing the Book of John and has also spoken at many Christian events.

When our church planted in 2011, Bruce was going to fly up from Los Angeles to speak at our church and but we had to cancel. I was disappointed but Bruce encouraged me on the phone. What a wonderful brother in Christ, besides being a talented actor.

I still re-read my text books on the subject of Theology and Christology when preparing for the sermon or teaching, but I find the Bible is still my personal favorite source of reading each day.

God bless you, Prycejosh1987, and your family.

I think it would be amazing to be chosen to play Jesus in a feature length movie. Most children only get to play in his nativity scene for their church or school Christmas play, and nobody really gets to play baby Jesus! (Usually played by a doll).

I'd do bible skits for bibles in schools and everyone was eager to have parts, though there seemed to be more roles for boys than girls.

Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat are biblical musicals which are fun to watch. I do think 'miracle plays' might have some transforming effect on the people who play them, but then how if you are a christian actor would you act if you were always cast as the villain?

Hey Lanolin;

If you haven't seen the movie yet, check out Matthew from my post. Bruce Marchiano did an amazing job playing the part of Jesus.

God bless you, sister, and your family,
