So Many Different flavors of Baptist

Thank you Bob for your words.

I am pretty sure that we all have seen such things take place....I know I have.

The Azusa Street Revival had its roots in Kansas. A preacher named Charles Parham was one of the early proponents of the Pentecostal movement in the United States and the first to suggest that speaking in tongues was the inevitable evidence of being baptized in the Holy Spirit. Parham started a Bible school in Topeka, Kansas. One of his students was an African-American preacher named William Joseph Seymour who was the leader of the event.

The rest of the story is very sketchy and hard to find but it seems as though Seymours teacher and mentor, Charles Parham, the father of the Pentacostel movement was arrested and in reports, is that Parham was having homosexual sex with the younger man. In their words, he was a "sodomite."

Know that thgerer was some very starnge stuff going on that time, including people barking, strange noises, frozen as staues etc! Think Parham denied the trinity also...

I was not able to find out about his belief in the Trinity but from what I studied about 40 years ago about his was that he He believed in annihilation of the unsaved and denied the Bible doctrine of eternal torment. He believed in the unscriptural doctrine of anglo-Israelism. He taught that there were two separate creations, and that Adam and Eve were of a different race than people who allegedly lived outside of the Garden of Eden.

Strange is not the right word OMHO.

Even Calvin seemed to go back and forth on the matter of the atonement being limited or unlimited , and I still go for limited, but would see it as being that while the death of Jesus was sufficient to have saved all sinners, only the saved ones will benefir from it!

Agreed. However one benefitting is not the same thing as salvation be "available" for ALL who call upon the Lord.

"Availability" is the key between the two thoughts.

Yes, best word would be Heresy!

Well, Mr. Parham also taught the fringe two-seed theory or “Where did Cain get his wife, or was there a pre-Adamite race!” —a theory that is always found connected to ‘another race’, the two seed theory of Christian Identity’ or aliens’ or that Biblical record is false and that Adam was not the first man God created. This same theory was later to influence other Pentecostal preachers like William Branham.

Branham denied the trinity, and also claimed to be greatest healer since Christ, as he had an angel that gave him his power! No doubt was same angel that spoke to Joseph, Ellen White, and Muhammed!

I'm a bit wary of all those movements although I was not around at the time there was 'Jesus movement' in the 1970s, some people I talk to remember what it was like where they marched down the street preaching the gospel and everyone was talking about it, sounded more like a revival though it seemed shortlived.

Word of Faith is probably the one that ppl most need to be careful of, as well as Bethel because of ppl chasing after signs and wonders. It doesn't seem to affect the baptists too much though because baptists have a strong tradition of scripture study that these other, newer churches don't really have.

I remember attending a few meetings of a newer group that was kind of taking direction from Word of Faith and they hardly cracked open the Bible at all. I just wonder where they are getting all their scripture from or just ignoring it in favour of soundbites from their favourite preachers.

In US the gap between rich and poor is super wide. Like the rich people would have huge mansions, jets and cars and the poor will be just in trailer parks. It comes from their system of economics I suppose and lack of welfare for the poor. But people don't begrudge that in the US really, its more of the attitude that if you are rich that you earned it and those people who are poor are just lazy. Which isn't always the case.

I would offer. It would seem different points of interest used as traditions of men give us finger prints as to how we each hear God. In that way it is two walking in agreement to one perfect law of love, the gospel of peace.

Baptist’ focus on water baptism. Lutherans focus on reformation. Pentecost’s signs and wonders etc and in those different denominations more varieties just like in Revelation using 7 different denominations each one having a focus necessary for the good of all to hear what the one Spirt is saying his interpretation feely given to us. . .

It becomes why water baptism where do we find the foundation of the doctrine? The Bible informs us there must be heresies or sects among us. I believe to protect new creatures from killing each other .The foundation of paganism out of sight out of mind.

The weapons of our warfare are not carnal made of the rudiments of this world .We put on the whole armor of God.

There can be differences of tradition as long as the tradition does not make the fullness of Christ's grace denying the Lord that bought them without effect or desolate .

One thing I have discovered is the use of parables the signified language of scripture it seems to clarify much confusion

Heresy = opinion, sect, denomination , creed, private revelation ,personal commentary

1 Corinthians 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

Again the sect or denomination that deny the fullness of grace by which the lord purchased them . (there are a few). That heresy is judgeble as those who still need the power of the gospel

2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

So water baptism is common to all Baptist groups?

What separates Baptist's from one another?

many in the word of faith would see their teachers and leaders as modern day Apostles and prophets, so why open the Bible when they claim to hear from God directly? Very dangerous!
