Proverbs 28:2

Whenever I ask God for wisdom, about what's been going on in the world He gives me this proverb.

Can we discuss what it means? Any translation.

Mine (KJV) says

For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged.

This Proverb is showing the contrast between the spiritually wise and the foolish leaders of the world. Wise leaders tend to have lasting kingdoms whereas the Unwise tend towards shorter lived kingdoms (or reigns) followed by many other leaders with short lived kingdoms (or reigns). This maybe through assassinations, unexpected death, illness, or a host of other political turmoil.

Hello Lanolin;

Proverbs 28 is what is called the Contrast Proverbs of good and evil. I'd like to add what Chuck shares in my own words.

Good leaders are hard to find because they too are men and women with imperfections. David and Solomon were good leaders though they had their weaknesses of sin. But they sought God and He guided them to uphold His nation with wisdom.

Bad leaders are easy to find and even worse when they band together to rule a nation. Each one has his or her ulterior motives and in time will clash with each other and crumble the nation.

Proverbs 28:2 can also refer to an individual who sins against (God,) his family, employer or church and can cause havoc, a broken family, employer or church.

But when understanding, knowledge, discernment (NIV) is obtained, Solomon is saying all these come from God when we seek Him.

yes well we all have to pray for our leaders, anyone in authority as they make decisions that affect us.

That the holy spirit, who is the spirit of wisdom and understanding, speaks to them. A lot easier if you know the leaders is already Christians and have the holy spirit in them already I suppose.

I mean a lot of us don't have a direct link to our leaders, we can't just call them up or advise them what to do in all situations every time. (A lot of wisdom is ignored!)

I was thinking how the delta variant got in NZ, it was traced back to one returnee from Australia who wasn't tested before they got on the flight back. And they didn't have to because the govt at that point had officially relaxed the rules. Eeek I am sure people that understood had pointed out how risky that would be at the time but it seemed they (princes making decisions?) didn't listen.

By princes I wonder if this proverb is talking about the 'young rich rulers' whereas the man of understanding and knowledge doesn't necessarily have to be a prince or anyone in authority...

In the Bible......"Princes" is used, as a general term for a person with power or authority.

Am wondering what kind of 'transgression' the proverb is talking about.
Is any sin a 'transgression'? What would be a particular example?

I'm going to pick...uncleanness.

I'm sure people know what this one is though people use a different word - POLLUTION

Uncleanness is something more in the Bible. A people and animals were described as being unclean. Certain animals were called unclean meaning they were not to be eaten by people. People were described as unclean in a number of circumstances. Leviticus describes many of these circumstances. For instance touching a dead body made someone unclean. A leper was unclean.

well yes but hadn't God cleansed us from unrighteousness, plus told Peter all the animals he could eat he wasn't supposed to call unclean anymore.
I was thinking the 'unclean' mentioned in OT is more of a taboo to not touch rather than it actually being toxic (though it actually could be toxic...) for example you can eat pork and crayfish and it won't kill you..

to sin is to break a law of God, but to transgress may mean to go beyond a limit. In fact, the word transgress comes from the Latin transgrediortrans meaning beyond, and gredior, meaning to pass.

To sin is to break the moral code; to transgress could be to violate a law without sinful intent. As an example, a person intentionally breaking the speed limit while driving a car on the freeway could be classed as committing a sin against the laws of the State, while a policeman exceeding the speed limit while chasing a criminal would have transgressed the speed limit law, but having done so in the performance of duty for a noble purpose, would not be punished for breaking the law against speeding.

Eve was deceived by Satan and thus violated the law that God had given to her and to Adam. Adam, on the other hand, made a conscious decision to partake of the forbidden fruit in order to comply with the higher law.

Hello Major;

You posted some good stuff to think about. To me, sin - immoral act against God, transgressions - an act of lawlessness against God and iniquities are gross wickedness and injustice against God are levels of sin.

I have a question. In our confession are we to use these levels of sin? Just like another religion that has it's own "venial" - lesser sins and "mortal" - worst sins that can forfeit your eternity of heaven.

I get asked this from time to time, "isn't a sin a sin no matter the seriousness in the eyes of God?" So how do you define the levels of sin in Christianity?

God bless you, brother.

You asked......
"... In our confession are we to use these levels of sin"

Not in my opinion, NO!

Forgiveness and reconciliation are words that describe what God does. But what is our part in it? What do we do? We confess. And what do we confess? We confess all our sins.

God has cleansed us from all unrighteousness. In old Testament times they washed and waited a period of time to become clean. Christ taught us that we can truly be cleansed by the washing of Christ's blood and the Holy Spirit brings about true change in us.

but what about the land, when is that going to be washed and become clean?
Nobody is leaving the land time to become clean and recover are they. We are still living on polluted land...especially in cities.

The rubbish truck has just come and taken all the rubbish away...where are they going to dump it...on the land...! (but further away from our houses)

Pollution is a problem that won't go away in this life. When Christ comes it will all be cleaned up and made new. The Day of the Lord is going to play havoc on the land and seas as well.
