Were any here once part of a cult then?

Great!

The Army breaks you down and builds you up. They physically and culturally isolate you. They impose a rigid rank structure and demand complete obedience.

They are, by definition, a cult. A necessary cult, even a moral one, but a cult just the same.
It functions on a similar level and you could draw parallels, and often people disgruntled about their time in will harp on those, but in seriousness it is absolutely not a cult.

1. Cults do not protect people......the Military does.
2. You can leave by your own choice when your commitment is up.
3. Cults have better snacks.
4. Cults have a lot more sex.

I am quite fond of my military service. Those were among the best ten years of my life, but you are wrong about the military not being a cult. The "why" is unimportant. The behavior is all that matters. And yes, you can leave, but only at designated times as defined by the Army, and they can -- at their sole discretion -- ignore your ETS date if they so choose. "Needs of the Army .."

I loved my time in service but that young man is gone. The man I am today holds no desire for that prior life.

I am sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience. When I was in, I did not like war or killing people. No one in the right mind would.

I am however grateful for my experience instilled in me.

I spent 22 years in the air force and loved it. As an airstrike controller, I spent most of that time attached to army combat arms units, including a mountain division. Where else can a person earn decent pay for leading a life of adventure?

I was 13Alpha10. That was the Armies position of Airforce's airstrike controller.
For those who do not know, there was a time in the Army when artillery positions had a person who called the shots from 10 miles away.
He gave the coordinates to the men at the weapon and called.......FIRE!

Now it is called in by satellites to a computer.

my youngest son is a corporal in the USMC, Mortar man , and like to explode those "big mortars"

It wasn't a bad experience. I did not mean to give that impression. One can enjoy something yet still acknowledge it for what it is.

Good morning LearningToLetGo;

I worked in accounting for 23+ years and never liked it. I kept changing jobs hoping the atmosphere would be better but it was the same gig.

It paid good and I enjoyed interfacing with vendors, customers, my peers and managers. They could see I was a Christian but wasn't happy. They cherished the workers who "died" for the company, staying late to balance $5.00.

True story about their most dedicated workers.

God taught me later how Joseph served as prison ward in Genesis 39-40 and flourished with God's Hand. But he was still in prison.

Years later I have no regrets as God showed me how my work in accounting brought Him glory and benefitted my wife and me during those times.

The Bible states to us to be faithful to wherever God chooses to place us into, for in the ultimate sense, its FAR more important to have His approval than any body here on earth

Yes it does, YeshuaFan. We may not see it at first but as God matures each of us all who follow Him develop a grateful heart and giving our all in all, no matter where He calls us.

God bless you, brother.

If he wants to explode "big mortars"......encourage him to go out to the 155 howitzer range.
a friend of mine was in the navy , and he stated that when they had to shoot all 3 of his big guns on the ship at same time during maneuvers, the entire ship got pushed sideways out in the ocean
