Excellent question.Major ( for the sake of clarification ).... I am interested in hearing you address this question.
What about the Christian who truly does LOVE JESUS but cannot seem to shake his/her addiction issues on this side of heaven? This person is tormented with guilt and shame... has REPENTED more times than most people realize.... and is simply UNABLE to gather the strength and faith to conquer their addiction.
I see this person in a different way than I do the CHRISTIAN who is living in a sin that is CONDONED and ACCEPTED by their church.
So many people are out of fellowship with GOD.... because they have embraced SINFUL lifestyles and beliefs.
My own family included.
IMHO, On this side of heaven, every Christian will struggel with sin. The apostle John writes to believers of every generation in 1 John 1:10......“If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth”.
If Christians were destined never to wrestle with sin, then Jesus would not have taught His followers to pray in Matt. 6:12......
“Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us".
The good news is that, even though we still sin, we can confess our sins to the Lord, receive His forgiveness and cleansing, and remain in fellowship with God.
Now there are two ways to look at this.
#1 is that when you receive Jesus as the Christ and He lives in you, "Greater is He that lives in you than is he who lives in the world".
The teaching is that IF you have received Jesus, the Holy Spirit will empower you to conquer that sin that besets you and allow you to repent which mean to "change directions".
Please understand that the Bible teachs us that as soon as we place our faith in Jesus Christ and receive His salvation, the Bible teaches us that we become new creations in Jesus Christ. Our old life of sin is dead and gone, and a new life begins according to 2 Cort. 5:17 and Romans 6:4. At the same time, we are just starting a spiritual growth process called sanctification.
#2 is that Habitual sin, or Known sin to you won’t cause you to lose your salvation or keep you out of heaven, but it can hinder our fellowship with God if we don’t humbly confess and continually seek restoration and it will cause you to lose the "rewards/Crown" you may have earned when you stand before the Lord Jesus to give an account of all the things you did in your life.
Now then, the problem with #2 is that it is two fold and require an opinion from the sinner.
A. What is sin as God looks at it?
B. What is sin to ME? (What do I think sin is).
IMPO we must be very, very careful with this one. If we say that I am saved and believe that Jesus is my Savior, but I have a desire to kill people and as long as I confess it I am still a Christian.
Now extrapolate "Murder" to any other known sin that God condemns and ask yourself..........can I be a habitual liar, or prostitute, commit adultery, or thief, or homosexual and still consider myself as born again, a new creature in Christ?
