I believe Kevin's original question is not whether spiritual gifts exist, but how to discern between true gifts and fakery.

For instance, today we see so-called 'faith healers' on television where, with the movement of the so-called healers hand, the supposedly infirmed falls over backwards. Then, they claim to be healed. Of course, this could all be staged for the dupes' benefit to convince them to fork over some money. The Christian should be able to determine true healings from fake ones.

Likewise, we see entire modern-day churches emphasize the speaking of 'gibberish' in church to achieve a spiritual high as well as in private, claiming it to be 'tongues' and 'evidence of the Holy Spirit'. The Christian should be able to discern if such practice is, indeed, the 'tongues' of the Bible or just another false ritual.

The only way to be able to sort fact from fiction is not by spiritualism, but from studying the Word of God and using it to prove or disprove these alleged spritual gifts.

It is in the fruit

Have you ever seen a Macitosh, Yellow Delicious, Wine Sap. Granny Smith , pear, summer apple, Crab apple tree ?????
Well I have. . .
The barks of the apple trees (all apple trees and pear trees) are essentialy alike, so are the leaves and the branch patterns. And they are mutualy graftable. In other words one can connect the branches of any one to another and until the fruit appears there is no practicle way to know what kind of apples it will provide. I call it the "Chrurch apple tree"

Why??????

Honestly??? How many here can identify and apple tree without fruit, or a rose bush without flowers?????

That is the way it is with "Christians" Ya can hang any
"sign" ya wan't on them but it's not until ya see the fruit that ya know just what kind of Christian they are.

Tongues can be faked, healings to. False wisdom professed, non existant belief proclaimed, un real spiritualism demonstrated, but none of it or the signs that people hang on it shows the truth as well as the fruit that comes from the life of the professing believer.

They always look good on the lot or in the package.
Ever notice that the biggest best looking fruit is always on top??? the best looking cars in the front row, the name brand food items at eye level in the grocery store???
Sure they all look good when their staged and packaged properly.
The same holds true for the church.
It's impossible to tell who's singing off key when we listen to it from a tape or the back of a giant santuary. But take them out of the box and let them sing acapela(Alone) and it don't take long to see who does and doesn't carry a tune even for the intrained ear.
The car must perform properly on the road not just look good on the lot. So it is if your looking at christians, you need to look at them outside of the church. ;)

Sincerely His
Cliff

Thanks Cliff for that explanation and it is so true .... We cannot be the judge of all that is going around us but we have to be our own judge as to how the Holy Spirit is moving in our own lives, we have to dig deeper in the Word and all of these things will be revealed to us as the Holy Spirit gives us a deeper meaning and understanding . We cannot rely on some one else for our tickle " fancy words " but search for ourselves and let the Holy Spirit be our guide.

People go to church to " receive " and that is the wrong motive. We need to go to our houses of worship to "give ". Give to our Lord and Saviour all our praise , all our honour and all our glory for what He has done in our lives. We are not in church to look at what this one is wearing or how this one is worshipping. We are there to bring our sacrifices of praise to a Holy God who deserves all of our praise. We should not have to be coaxed to worship but break out out in spontanious response to Almighty God the author and finisher of our faith. Praise be to HIs Holy NAME. The name that is above every other name..... THE NAME OF JESUS.
