Many, many Christian moms and dad will allow their children to dress up as emons, devils, ghosts and just about anything that looks like death.

They do it because...."I did it when I was a child"...."It is just innocent fun"!

For those of you who do not understand, please consider what God has said to us............In Deuteronomy 18:9-13 -
"When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the Lord your God".

Halloween has its roots in Catholicism and Celtic practices, in which the name “Halloween” comes from the former and the evil practices come from the latter.

The actual word, "Halloween" comes from the two words ........
1. “Hallow,” which means holy person and
2. “een,” which is supposed to mean “eve.”

Hallow refers to the “holy people” or the saints celebrated within the Catholic Church on All Saints’ Day, which occurs on November 1.
The “een” added on the end of “Hallow” constitutes the meaning that this is the day before All Saints’ Day. Within the Catholic tradition, the holiday of All Saints’ Day honors and celebrates the saints who have passed away.

Now then, the darker side of Halloween has its roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain, which is the celebration of the end of summer. According to Celtic tradition during Samhain, the veil between our world and the “Otherworld” is broken, which enables spirits from the dead to come back and visit the living.
As part of SAMHAIN celebration, the Celts offered food, animals, and even people to the spirit world.

In addition to the spirit world being able to visit the real world, the Celts believed witches, goblins, fairies, and demons would be roaming around the earth and could visit the inhabitants of the earth. The Druids believed in order to appease the demons, witches, fairies, and goblins, you had to leave them sweets or you had to dress up like them in a costume in order to not be detected as a human being.

Huge bonfires would be built, and huge celebrations would be held in honor of the spirits and the departed souls. The Celtic Druids were known for their celebration of Halloween as it was honored as the most important holiday of the entire year. The Druids would have extreme festivals, celebrations, and feasts in honor of Samhain.

The Celtic tradition of Samhain celebrated across England, Ireland, and Northern France in the past is clearly a celebration of evil. Christians should not participate in Samhain, and they should strongly encourage others to abstain from the festival of Samhain as well.
As believers, we need to exercise caution and wisdom whenever we approach topics, such as the holiday of Halloween. Evil was celebrated on Halloween in the past, but if you choose to celebrate Halloween in your Christian freedom by passing out candy to children, dressing up, or going trick-or-treating, you are in fact participating in an ancient evil worship practice.

i am against the dressing up as the evil characters. if a child puts on say spider man etch i have no issue , just like Christmas and Santa Claus. keep them separated teach the kids about Jesus and Santa can have his place

Despite it’s roots, I don’t see that the Halloween of today has the meaning it once did at all and is more a harvest or fall celebration here abouts.

Today’s Halloween holiday has elements cobbled together from American and various European cultures and has morphed into a holiday for children to dress up and provides them an excuse to amass a normally forbidden amount of candy.

We typically get 150-200 kids that come by for candy. We see see many more tiny Disney princesses and Jedi warriors than vampires or goblins.

It doesn’t interfere with my personal relationship with God and I manage to sneak a couple Reese’s butter cups out of the bowl for the wife and I.

God bless.

the only thing i celebrate is Christmas and its not on dec 25 its year round had he not been born of a virgin and Born of God . we could not be saved he will save his people from there sins

I find it a harmless good time for children. Same with Easter baskets and egg hunts that some oppose. Personally l dont think Christ objects to children having fun getting candy and hunting eggs.

I appreciate everyones opinion. However, I follow God's Word closer as it was He who said............
Leviticus 19:26-31 – Do not practice divination or sorcery… nor turn to mediums or and familiar spirits.

Leviticus 20:6 – I will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums and familiar spirits.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 – Anyone who practices witchcraft, or sorcery, or conjuring spells is an abomination.

Isaiah 8:19 – “When men tell you to consult mediums and familiar spirits, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?”

Isaiah 47:13-14 – Behold, the astrologers, the stargazers, and the monthly prognosticators shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them. They shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame.

Jeremiah 10:2 – “Do not learn the way of the Gentiles…”

Ephesians 5:11 – “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

This weekend, just outside of Lakeland Fl. the SouthEast coven of PAGAN Witches are holding their yearly festival. They do it every year at this time. It is a WORSHIP experience for them Halloween and has long been known as “The Festival of the Dead.” The ancient rituals today are still performed by those involved in witchcraft who continue to call the celebration “The Feast of Samhain.”

It continues to be the major day on which witches attempt to communicate with the dead through various forms of divination. One of those practices is to learn the secrets of life and wisdom by lying on a grave and listening to the messages from familiar spirits or by calling them up from out of the grave, all practices thoroughly forbidden by God. When anyone believes that it is a harmless little game for children to play.....you have actually allowed those children to participate in the Occult which is in effect, Satan worship.

That kind of action along with Easter rabbits and chiks and eggs is "compromise" with the world and the Bible tells us to "Come out of the world and be seperated"!

I am sorry that I have to disagree with you. The fact is that Halloween truly is a “holy” day because it is set aside to worship the devil. Satan hates God and mankind very much, and wants to hurt us all. So it should make Christians very sad that so many people want to celebrate a day which was meant to give recognotion to God's enemy........IMHO.

this goes on every day when our son was young we took him to town and he got treats . we did not celebrate Halloween for how it was originally. Churches around have a fall festival some hold a trunk or treat program. Kids can have costumes but nothing evil.. i like to study people from a distance i see younger people wearing jackets that has the sign of Satan on it.. to be honest there Lost and dont have a clue imho. they think its cool

That’s okay Major, I had absolutely no expectations I would change your mind. :)

I don’t disagree with everything in your post, just some of your extrapolations, conclusions and their meanings.

Thank you for your post and for giving us all something to consider on the origins and meaning of Halloween.

God Bless you and all those you love.

I have mixed feelings about it. Being Catholic, the Catholic part of it makes me feel like it's okay, but the Celtic/dark side of it makes me feel like it's wrong. But then on the other hand, I remember how much fun I had as a kid going trick or treating and dressing up. I never dressed up as anything evil though. So it's hard to decide. But I am starting to learn that little things matter. Celebrating it may seem harmless, but it's not as harmless as people think. So I'm on the fence. Kids who don't understand it like we do will feel left out and like they are missing something.

That's how I kind of think too. It's like how rocks used to be used to stone people, does that mean a rock collector is evil? People used to worship cats, is having pet cats evil? People used to dance to other gods around fires, does that mean it's wrong to sit in front of a cozy fireplace? Meanings behind things change the way language changes. English of 500 years ago would be almost unrecognizable today. Just about everything was at some point connected to evil practices. So I'm on the fence, there's many ways to view it.

Hallowe’en is evil?

I’m not sure really.

Major, yes He does condemn sorcery and witchcraft and divination but I am not sure dressing up and pretending to be one is the same as actually being one.

But part of me enjoys celebrating hallowe’en because I naturally enjoy parties and dressing up is fun( even for adults) it seems like harmless fun. It’s like we get to role play without any actual consequences. Same as watching hallowe’en movies.

The Keyword here being harmless.

I know of no child who grew up to become a witch who once enjoyed dressing up as one.

But I do think there is a dark side to all this.

It’s not acceptable to believe divination is good and we should at least teach children about the origins of hallowe’en and about why sorcery and divination is wrong.

Before (BC days) I used to pass out goodies;
now, we just pass.

As do I.

Halloween, as we know it today, is a modernized version of the Druidic festival of the dead. The powerful Druid priests were deemed kings of the occult practitioners, and were known for worshipping evil spirits and sacrificing humans to their demon gods!

Do we as Christians need to be involved in such a thing?????

Proverbs 24:10-12...............
"If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength! Rescue those being led away to death;
hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,”
does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it?
Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?"

Remember what the Lord Jesus said to a specific church about being on the fence............To the Laodicean's He said -

Revelation 3:16............
“So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”

That is a vivid picture of rejection. WHY?????

Because they were "Lukewarm", sitting on the fence between Worldly goods and the Love for Jesus.

There are only TWO kinds of people ......LOST and SAVED! The "born again" believers are to place the Lord Jesus Christ 1st in all that they do.

When Jesus said to us in Deut. 18 that we are to have NO PART in communication with witches, Occult, necromancy, and dead things.......HE meant it. Now THAT is exactly what Halloween represents!!!!!

Thank you for your post and for giving us all something to consider on the origins and meaning of Halloween.

God Bless you and all those you love.

Please do not misunderstand me. All I do is post facts about this day and then it is up to the Holy Spirit to convict....not me.

Many years ago (I forgot how many) I was the best at going out on this day and getting candy. My two friends and I would bring home sacks full.

But then one day I learned what it was all about....death. THen like a rock falling on my head, I could not longer participate.

I guess it was when a professor of mine explained what "Walking through the fire" meant in Deut. 18. That was when the people in Cannan did with their children. They BURNED THEM ALIVE as a sacrifice to the god Molech for better crops.

That is why the Lord Jesus told them....."When you come into the land...."DO NOT DO WHAT THE CANNANITES DO!"............

Deut. 18:10........."There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass[a] through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee."

Now the question must be...........Does that Scripture NOT apply to the Christian today??????

The Encyclopedia Britannica states:..................
“In ancient Britain and Ireland, the Celtic festival of Samhain was observed on October 31 at the end of the summer … The souls of the dead were supposed to revisit their homes on this day and the autumnal festival acquired sinister significance, with ghosts, witches, goblins, black cats, fairies and demons of all kinds said to be roaming about. It was the time to placate the supernatural powers controlling the processes of nature. In addition, Halloween was thought to be the most favorable time for divinations concerning marriage, luck, health, and death. It was the only day on which the help of the devil was invoked for such purposes.” (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2005, "Halloween").

2 Corth. 6:17..........
"“Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,”

A little girl dressing up like a witch to trick or treat and a practicing witch are miles apart. I remember some were saying the Harry Potter books and movies were evil. One of Swaggarts preachers Even went as far to say that the wizards even used the magic words for the spells. Halloween is fun for kids. I dont think a child dressed as a witch thinks she is an evil witch.

Not in my opinion.

My dear friend.......I have been involved in teaching against and exposing the Occult for over 30 years.
I only say that to let you know that this is not my 1st rodeo.

While pop culture paints wizards, witches and warlocks as fun, relatable characters, what many do not realize is that the world of the dark arts is real. There do exist witches, warlocks and wizards and they do cast spells, study potions and practice magic and the presence behind their motives is SATAN himself.

Around Halloween time, witches celebrate Samhain and “hold particularly intense rituals, evoking people who have passed away and hoping to receive a message or help from the other side.”

Witches are both male and female and the term “warlock” is used, However, some male witches do use the term and are trying to reclaim it.

I have not heard the Swaggert's speak against Harry Potter, but if they did THEY ARE CORRECT TO DO SO!!!!!!

Guilty by association my brother and I think it would help everyone to realize this Halloween season, witches, wizards and warlocks are real and the more a person delves into the dark arts, the farther away they drift from God. That CAN and HAS begun with a little girl dressed up as a witch!!!!!

Do you completely disregard the Scriptures in Deuteronomy?
