Sometimes I can’t help but think that advertising competition is a form of propaganda

No I always hated ads. Annoying things, esp on tv and radio. Nostalgia for ads...? what?!

When I did radio I was commercial free. I wouldn't even let anyone sponsor my show. I'm not selling it to the devil lol.
Well I dont hate ads as much as I hate the interruption of my favourite shows.
some ads are funny enough to consider buying a product just to see f they live up to their name. I would never buy something expensive doing it this way though haha.

I remember a lot of chocolate and toy ads were always being playing between children's TV shows and none of the toys influenced me to buy them that I can recall. But I suppose I could have been too young to notice But the choccies did...

I used to go to the shop and eye up the goodies. I cant say for sure the ads ever worked to be honest, because I was also influenced by other things in the shops too, like friends and shopkeepers and the other colourful goodies on parade.

But ads do work to a certain extent if not just so you remember their name.

If an ads in a magazine, you can usually tell it's an ad and skip over it. If its in the middle of your favourite tv show, you have to either mute it or go away and come back in five minutes. You can't just fast fwd it. haha

Ads and trailers are usually shown before movies but if you get to the movie on time you'll skip the ads though you might not have anywhere to sit.
Buses always have ads now plastered over them and in bus stops. Possibly to pay for them or extra source of revenue. I thought it would be more useful to have little libraries or poetry or art at the bus stops rather than advertising, but what do I know. I'm not a money hungry ad salesperson.

Imagine if I just stuck my name on everything, like Lanolin brand.

Lanolin airlines, Lanolin Rail, Lanolin beverages, Lanolin insurance, Lanolin lipstick, Lanolin watches and cars, Lanolin shoes, Lanolin bags....

Hello, PTSTintheAsylum;

Personally, I'm in favor because they are a Christian restaurant but I don't buy my food there because it's always backed up with customers, nor do I miss it because I can go to my fave restaurant or fast food and purchase my order faster and I didn't have to see their ad to entice me.

You shared something interesting. I once built up my collection of (Sony) beta tape movies and later VHS. I enjoy watching movies over again in my collection until years ago my wife took my collection and donated them. Grrrrrrrrrr!

So I have built up my dvds with the collection of same and new movies. But now I'm learning that people are not collecting dvds while watching movies, documentaries, etc...by other means - YouTube, streaming, cell phone and others.

You also shared something else interesting. Where are you running into commercials from the 70's, or old commercials? Surely not tv, or perhaps on your collection of dvds?

God bless
you always.

Well.........from what I have experienced personally at Chick Filet...they are one of the most highly trained and friendly young staff of people I have ever seen. That kind of emplyee staff and customer relations begins at the top and to Me it shows just how Christain based they are.

The one here in town always has 20 or 30 cars in line, Just crazy at how well they are doing.

No wonder! When he grew up in the movie he looked just like his Dad. lol!

Hello Major;

I'm sorry but don't know about Spectrum. Is this service for watching shows, advertising or both?

God bless you, brother and Happy Thanksgiving!

I mostly ignore tv ads that interrupt my favorite shows. I could care less over movie trailers playing before the one I wanted to see, most of the time they’ll play way too many trailers in the theater. But of course, it is a necessity to show a trailer of specific movies to at least spark interest. After all, that’s why we come to see a movie, right? Thankfully, on vhs and dvd releases, you can simply fast forward it. As for ads posted on buses and other vehicles, I simply ignore them. Sure they’re a distraction, but they don’t really flash in my face as much as tv ads do.

The Internet is different, only some of it has been commercialised (eg go on to a site, pay money) most people just use it for communications, not selling stuff. It was originally just for academics to share information. Before it got monetised.

Anyway if you just using it to buy stuff and play games, then complain about ads, then it's on you to think about WHY you use the internet.

Actually the internet is not too different, it’s a combination between tv and telephones. You don’t seem to realize that some communication forums are commercialized (mostly sites like Reddit and Twitter).

Like I said, I’m only talking about the annoying ads on TELEVISION that interrupts people’s favorite programs and waste so much time. And I don’t watch tv anymore. I don’t really have a problem with place-on ads on the internet because I can simply just ignore it.

Ads are the main reason why I don't watch TV, I only stream like Netflix or Prime without commercials. I refuse to watch anything that has commercials. As a kid I used to instinctively mute the TV when commercials came on. I've always hated them. I have an ad blocker on my computer so no ads come through. It always felt like mental/emotional manipulation. If I had to choose between watching something with commercials or watch nothing, I would choose to watch nothing. I abhor commercials and ads of any kind. As soon as something becomes full of ads, I drop it.
I also hate watching movies and TV shows that have an agenda other than entertainment. If they can't tell a story without putting mostly sex in there or saying anti-God things, then I don't want to watch it. I watch almost no movies made after 2015 or so. I don't like the content/agenda that most things made after that time have in it. Sometimes I think most movies and TV shows made recently are just a delivery method for subtle brainwashing disguised as entertainment.

I think all advertising is 'propaganda' to a certain extent and can be misleading.

To limit exposure to advertising, I don't tend to bother reading newspapers, magazines keeping up with social media, or watching tv or you tube or anything where there tends to be advertising. I know an ad just wants to sell me something.

I also don't think of myself or believe myself to be a 'consumer'. I am a child of God, I have a soul. I'm not someone who has a bottomless wallet like lots of advertisers want me to believe. They are good at lying!
Amen! Exactly!

I can't stand Reddit and Twitter! Anything that doesn't let me control what discussions I see and participate in, I don't want to be a part of, not to mention the ads. Plus a lot of "people" on those sites are bots too. So you're not even interacting with a person. That's exactly why I looked for a site like this one. I wanted a place where I'm not being manipulated. It seems most message boards now are being inundated with bots posting as people. It's crazy. I look for message boards where bots are least likely to be.
