Politics and the Church.

I agree totally when it comes to doctrine and Bible truth.

What I was more talking about was when situations come up like......."the color of the new carpet".
Or ....what brand of refrigerator to buy.

Those are just THINGS and in the end do not mean anything anyway. However, some stake out a position and come hell or high water they will not be moved.
IOW, adiophra?

IMO, politics is inescapable in churches.
yes and its many times called certain families . the control the church if dad was a leader in the church. then son has to be a leader also. a local church blew up over a statement a son said in sunday school class . he was a type leader. his remark was God had delivered him from many things . but he still liked porn.
this upset many members they had a young man first time as pastor. he went to him told him he should step down as sunday school teacher and leader . his dad and mom was founding members dad is lifetime deacon...

needless to say the young pastor was shot down. told this man was a Godly man etc . needless to say the young man resigned as pastor . over half the Church left . to this day 30 is big number considering they run good 60-70 in attendance

so yes politics plays a Big role . in fact the church i pastor that i reopened closed due to politics . the person who was allegedly pastor ( was NOT called to preach) to this day i doubt the man is in Church he is divorced . the man before him was put in there as a stepping stone for Him to take over . yes i fully understand politics . i have seen in electing a pastor

Then the question must be........do we as Christians roll over or do we stand and speak out the truth of God's Word?
We stand up and speak the truth and rebuke the filth in society. We just don't get involved with the actual satanic government. We actively oppose all governmental evil while not resorting to force or any behavior that would disgrace the cross. When the church adopts the mores which the government wants, the devil wins. To see this exemplified, just look at the number of denominations now employing homosexual clergy and performing homosexual marriages.

How do you respond to those who say we need to be salt (a preserving influence) in the earth as a justification for the Church to be involved in politics?
Jesus didn't involve himself in politics. He kept his focus on God's mission, courageously rebuking the evil around him. You can rebuke evil without participating in Satan's evil political system.

2nd chronicles 7:14 if my people who are called by name

The audience of that passage is ancient Israel, not any contemporary country. No country today comprises a tribe of people who are called by God's name. Even modern Israel is largely secular.
so your not God people ? its not who it is addressed to its the Instructions If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

who is his people today called by his name ? Christian's it takes each person not just me not just you but each Christian .

In Mark 10:42-45, Jesus responding to his followers when they became political, competitive and power hungry by saying, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus opposed dominating, power hungry, competitive, self-serving leaders. Jesus taught servant leadership.

Just to be clear..........The Bible does not say that a divorced man can not be a Pastor. It actually says that he must be a married man.

Hello Major;

That brings another thought and question. Have any of us ever served or worshiped at church when the Pastor was always single? I have.

He is a good man of God, but never being married he was not equipped to minister to couples prior to marriage or to married couples whose relationship was strained.

We can say, "but the Holy Spirit would prompt him." Again, that is commendable, praise God, but God also prepares and builds us up to minister effectively, like a married man who pastors a church.

But what about Paul? He was called to be singled but ministered effectively when it came to marriage in the Paulines.

Could this be an example of politics in the church?

Good point and I can say honestly that.....NO. I have not seen that happen here in Florida.

Divorced and widowed, and then remarried.....YES.

Many years ago....(more than I want to admitt), a really great professor spoke to that very same question in a theology class of mone.

He made the speculation that Paul must have been a leader in the Jewish Sanhedrin and if that was the case, those men HAD TO BE married.
Also, The Bible never says whether Paul was married or not. Some think that he was at one time based on what he said in 1 Corinthians 9:5,..
"don’t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas?"

If Paul was married at one time, and was then a widower, his wife likely passed away considering he never mentions her in any of his writings.

where do you get all that from ? while i dont hold divorce against a person . there are circumstances in divorce they disqualifies them from preaching. i never mentioned divorce other than the person who was the allegedly pastor . for the record i know the person and circumstances him being ordained which was not by a presbytery. nor was he called to preach he was a follower of feelings

One primary reference for a church leader being married is 1 Tim 3, particularly verse 2. However, there is good reason to understand that "husband of one wife" was/is probably an injunction against multiple wives.

Multiple wives is so far removed from main stream Christian thought that it is easy to forget that in the time of the early church, multiple wives was not that uncommon. Certainly not in society at large, and one can contemplate that that was still reflected to a lesser extent among believers.

I get it from the Bible my brother!

1 Timothy 3:1-3.........
"The saying is trustworthy: If a man aspires to the office of a bishop, he desires a noble task. Therefore a bishop must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money."

Now please READ that Scripture and then post for all of us where it says that a Bishop (Pastor) can not be a "Divorced" man!!!

What the Scriptures actually and literally say is that a Pastor must be a MAN and that man must be MARRIED. There is not one single word or suggestion of the word "divorce" in that Scripture.

It was correctly stated in post #39 by my friend Siloam that it was Gods command that a Pastor be married to only ONE woman at a time.
It was common in that day for men to marry several women. One to do his cleaning, one to do his cooking and on and on!

God never ever suggested "Polygamy". That is the reason or "Must be the husband of ONE Wife"!

Thanks for the question brother.
