Sometimes I can’t help but think that advertising competition is a form of propaganda

I’m pretty sure many of us have fallen for false advertising at least once in our lives. Sometimes I feel bothered that tv and other forms of media used false information to make their products look good and opposing companies look bad. For example, when I was a kid, I found commercials advertising Chick Fil-A funny, because I was naive and had no knowledge of political propaganda. Funny how Chick Fil-A advertises on how “good” their food is, yet when I tried something there, I didn’t enjoy it. But that’s my opinion. Thinking back on how I fell for these ads makes me feel guilty that I shouldn’t be eating beef yet I don’t like the taste of the chicken in that restaurant. I feel really sorry for the people who were brainwashed into believing such false information. Just let people make the choices they want to make without feeling guilty.

Thankfully, they don’t do it nearly as much today as they did a long time ago. Sure, advertisements today are just as cliche as the ones back then, but at least they don’t have that particular “if you buy (opposing product), then you are a bad person” cliche shoved down our throats. I’m glad competitive advertisement is dying out because that in general makes people like me feel constantly ashamed for the choices we make.

Ads are now tailored to a personal computer algorithm and they always seem worse to me.

I get belly fat ads
Wrinkle cream ads
And I don’t have any lol
I wouldn’t mind if I did but they are not even comical or humorous like our ads on tv were in the 70’s.

I used to love the man who left milk tray for the ladies in a James Bond guise. And the ad for instant mash was funny and tasty.

Ads are rubbish today me thinks

Hello PTSDintheAsylum;

False advertising has sold each of us once, twice, thrice or more in our lives. Going all the way back to the salesman selling snake oil in the 19th century. They sold mineral water or spiced liquid claiming to heal the ailment of all diseases. Some snake oil salesmen would add cocaine or uppers as a "pick me up" to give the illusion that this sudden energy was a sign of healing. NOT!

The chicken you ate at Chick-fil-A may not taste good to you and that's your right according to your taste buds.

Chick-fil-A is actually a Christian owned fast food restaurant that built it's business on Christian principles, honest food and doesn't operate on Sundays to observe the day off to worship God. But this doesn't mean their menu is going to taste good to everyone.

The best combat to false advertising is pray first, seek wisdom and discernment, do your research and don't give them your business. It's their loss if they don't earn the money in your pocket.

God bless you, sister and your family.

I don’t really care for online advertisements I just simply ignore them if they’re easy to scroll by. Back then you can never skip any boring adverts without having to change the channel, which I’m pretty sure that they will be present in all channels at the same time, and I have to end up having to tolerate them no matter how much I hate them, until my favorite program comes back on. Either that or turn the tv off. This is basically the main reason why I stick to VHS tapes.

No offense, but I honestly cannot stand tv ads from the 70s and before, either. They are neither funny nor entertaining. They’re just flat-out boring and even unbearable from where I’m from. I’m just glad I can access to watching my favorite movies and tv shows without having to see any stupid ads get in my way. I’m a dvd collector these days and I really enjoy my hobby. Basically I go to thrift stores and buy decent quality movies and tv shows for a cheap price. You should really try it out.

I’m already aware that Chick Fil A is a Christian fast food restaurant. I don’t hate it because of its religion, but because of the competitive advertising it used. Like these days, I can’t seem to enjoy a beef-related product without having to think about the dumb “EAT MOR CHIKIN” slogan (not a grammar pendant, but the way they use bad spelling for humor just sickens me, mainly because I think it makes fun of working class and uneducated people). I’m already suffering from binge eating from my family food shaming me, and I most certainly don’t need any tv ad telling me what I should be eating/using/buying/etc.

Overall, I just find it and other old school ads to be nothing but brainwashing propaganda without allowing others to actually have a choice. I’m aware that today’s ads are also guilty of it too, but I’m less bothered by those in comparison to back then. Maybe I’m just too sensitive.

I think all advertising is 'propaganda' to a certain extent and can be misleading.

To limit exposure to advertising, I don't tend to bother reading newspapers, magazines keeping up with social media, or watching tv or you tube or anything where there tends to be advertising. I know an ad just wants to sell me something.

I also don't think of myself or believe myself to be a 'consumer'. I am a child of God, I have a soul. I'm not someone who has a bottomless wallet like lots of advertisers want me to believe. They are good at lying!

Hello, PTSTintheAsylum;

Personally, I'm in favor because they are a Christian restaurant but I don't buy my food there because it's always backed up with customers, nor do I miss it because I can go to my fave restaurant or fast food and purchase my order faster and I didn't have to see their ad to entice me.

You shared something interesting. I once built up my collection of (Sony) beta tape movies and later VHS. I enjoy watching movies over again in my collection until years ago my wife took my collection and donated them. Grrrrrrrrrr!

So I have built up my dvds with the collection of same and new movies. But now I'm learning that people are not collecting dvds while watching movies, documentaries, etc...by other means - YouTube, streaming, cell phone and others.

You also shared something else interesting. Where are you running into commercials from the 70's, or old commercials? Surely not tv, or perhaps on your collection of dvds?

God bless
you always.

I’m sorry this happened to you. Why would your wife do something like that?

And btw I’m seeing random old ads on YouTube, just in case you’re wondering.

I’d really like to know what you do on your spare time. I mean, you are active on this site, aren’t you?

This is basically the main reason why I stick to VHS tapes.
We have still quite a few old VHS tapes, simply because we bought them new 25- 40 years ago before DVD’s were available, and we still have a player that works!

Lots of epic and classic films like Cecil B De Milles Ten Commandments, Ben Her, To Kill a Mockingbird and old comedy's like Arsenic and Old lace, Harvey and several Alec Guinness movies as well as some old special TV series like the original Anne of Green Gables and Halmarks Sarah Plain and Tall series with Glenn Close and Christopher Walken. Plus, a slew of old Disney stuff.

We’ve replaced some other favorites with DVDs and blueray discs but there is some intangible ingredient added, maybe something nostalgic when you watch a favorite old movie on VHS, so we keep and watch many.

God Bless you and those you love.

Hello blueskies;

Do you remember when the Sony Betamax came out? It was "advertised" that the quality was superior and wouldn't share it's ingredient with the competition so the VHS was born and had more features. We were sold on Betamax until it was hard to rent or purchase movies and VHS was the only tape available. Sony eventually got out of the Betamax market and produced it's own VHS. Go figure.

My Dad bought us a Pioneer VHS player back in the 90s and we took real good care of it before we upgraded to two Sony DVD Blu Rays, one in the living room and bedroom. Then my wife donated our old VHS movies which is beyond me.

We have the classic
Cecil B De Miles Ten Commandments. I still get a kick when at the beginning of the movie he comes out on a stage and give an intro of the movie. I remember Ben Hur at the movie theatre but want to buy the DVD.

I feel the propaganda of today's commercials are more mixed with a liberal, woke or political spin. Even conservative commercials like a pillow or a bed with mechanics will guarantee a good night's sleep, supplemental pills that will help a person lose 50Ibs (I look at the
"before and after" and still wonder if that is the same person?!?) And the one that really gets me are law firms that encourage people to sue firms, the church and each other to resolve their conflicts.

I was encouraged years ago that reading my Bible and praying helps me sleep better. I find this true and it doesn't cost me a dime. Throughout the Old and New Testament teaches us about eating good food and this helps me keep the pounds off. I exercise to tone my body helps my circulation and reduce my sugar intake.

With so much that God provides to take care of us, I just don't trust most of advertising today.

God bless
you, brother, and your family.

Yes I do remember Betamax, and laserdiscs and other recording formats like Sony’s DAT cassettes that came out with a flourish… and went then went bye-bye when the public didn’t embrace the technology.
I still get a kick when at the beginning of the movie he comes out on a stage and give an intro of the movie.
Yes, he is so earnest and he obviously sincerely believes in his picture. I can’t imagine that intro, or even an epic movie like that, being made today.
Besides who’s gona play Moses better than Chuck?

Did you know the infant who portrays the baby Moses in the movie was Heston’s own baby son?
the propaganda of today's commercials
We watch zero commercial TV or media because we can’t stand the commercials.
As PTSDintheAsylum wrote, I resent the spin from either the left or right. It’s an insult to your intelligence to manipulate you as if you were incapable of forming your own decisions without their benevolent guidance.

Hmmm…. Does that sound like a rant? Deep breaths, deep breaths.

Amen brother Bob!

God Bless you and all those you love.

Wow yes!

Like I say… things in the U.K. were actually once of a good quality. In which I didn’t mind the ads then.
Now I can’t stand them. When an ad on tv comes on I go get my “drifter” mentality on and drift to how awesome Jesus😇 is!

I think the reason you have a nostalgia for older ads is mainly because you were a child watching them. I had the same mentality as you did until I realized when I look back on the old ads, most of them have aged pretty badly. I recommend you try rewatching the old ads you’ve seen as a child. Chances are it might not be as good as you remember.

Yes The old ads just seemed cheesy now. I did watch one yesterday and found I was looking back in nostalgia. A lot of my childhood memories came back..
It helped that we enjoyed those ads as we associated both food and entertainment With comfort and I see danger in that now but don’t quite know yet where to draw the line.

I think it’s because we were mostly naive as children and didn’t have a clue on advertising propaganda. It’s always been there ever since over a century ago, and it’s not very likely that it will go away any time sooner. I’m definitely sure the children of today’s generation enjoying the ads now will look back with fond memories, or maybe with disgust of cheesy it was a decade or two from now, just as we are with old school ads.

But I’m sure that it’d be best if we should draw the line right from where it started, despite our fond memories.
