The traditional Japanese haiku structure consists of three lines with a pattern of five, seven, and five syllables (known as 'on' in Japanese) that create two images or concepts, often related by a seasonal reference (kigo) and a pause (kireji) at the end of the first or second line. While the 5-7-5 syllable count is the most well-known aspect, the strict syllable count can be difficult to maintain and is not always followed, especially in English translations.
