The Mount of Olives is a mountain range facing Jerusalem on the east side. The Gardens of Gethsemane are at the foot of the mountain. It has four summits and they are called:
The Galilee peak It was called the Galilee peak from a tradition that the angels stood there when they spoke to the disciples after the Ascension of Jesus. (
Acts 1:11 ).
The Mount of Ascension It was called the Mount of Ascension because this is the site of the Ascension probably near Bethany and Jerusalem (
Luke 24:51:52).
Now Consider
Mount Olives is the place Jesus was taken up and the cloud received Him out of sight. The disciples returned unto Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives which is a Sabbath day’s journey from Jerusalem. “And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
“Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey. And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James [the son] of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas [the brother] of James.” (
Acts 1:7-13 ).
It is prophesized that the Jesus Christ will stand upon the Mount of Olives, and they will split in the midst toward the east and toward the west and create a great valley. Half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. The prophecy continues that speak of the day of the LORD, when Jesus Christ comes to be King over all the earth... “Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which [is] before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, [and there shall be] a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. And ye shall flee [to] the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, [and] all the saints with thee. And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the light shall not be clear, [nor] dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, [that] at evening time it shall be light.”
