18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.

Straightforward enough, can't see why God felt the desire to let Adam do all the animal naming instead of doing it himself but there you go.
If you examine any interaction Jesus had with people it usually involved a question, not because He didn't know but to point out a deficiency. This is what happened to Adam. Two things: to show his cognitive abilities and to show his need - no mate.

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

23 And Adam said:

“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

Presumably God made all the animals in both sexes at the same time? Why would he then decide to make a man with functioning reproductive organs but nothing to mate with? The woman seems a bit of an after thought when I would of made them at the same time if I was him. One's no good without the other is it?
I don't have a clue why... but here's an interesting observation:

let’s look at what happens when a man and woman become one. As we can see that separately they reveal differing aspects of God, together they show even more. If you combine the letter of man and woman separating the common letters from the unique letters, you get the following:

איש (man) + אשה (woman) = אש (fire) + יה (God) + אש (fire)

Notice that both man and woman turn into “sacrifice consumed” (the meaning of fire)! When a man and woman marry both must sacrifice their passions (fire) to compromise for each other, give and take, and allow God to work in their midst, otherwise they’ll become a conflagration – an extensive fire that destroys a great deal; fire + fire! There are two things I notice about this layout of fire on each side of God. One, both “fires” are identical words. Though men and women are not the same, they are certainly equal, one flesh. Eve came from Adam’s rib, not his foot or his head. The second is that in order to keep the balance, the difference, between man and woman requires God’s input into their individual differences as well as what they have in common. He is the pivot point.

Now if you combine all the letters of man and woman you get the word for foundationאשיה with the letters meaning of “first provide the work of grace”. These two are the foundation for a family. We see the opposite of this everywhere now-a-days with so many divorces. No one takes the blame, and part of this is because neither prepares to be married before the wedding ceremony.

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Why would they be ashamed? We didn't always wear clothes.

1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

I struggle with this, a cunning snake is one thing but a cunning talking snake is not something I can get my head around at all.

Don't miss how satan works in these verses.

The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” (Genesis 3:1 NLT)

He plants doubt.

“It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’” (Genesis 3:3 NLT)

But the lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” (Genesis 2:16, 17 NLT)

Notice the differences. Eve left out "freely," she has already lost gratitude. Then "you will die/lest you die," where God says you are sure to die. The doubt is growing.

“You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. (Genesis 3:4 NLT)

Then a lie, from the father of all lies.

As for a talking snake, Satan is the master of posing himself as something else and not tempting someone with his full identity exposed.

I've never heard a snake talking, have you?

I've never encountered a talking snake. If satan is a master of deception, would he repeat himself? And satan knows the bible, he uses scripture to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, but I don't want to get to far ahead.

@TubbyTubby And when are you going to start understanding that things in the garden were different than today? You keep going in circles of disbelief. Why are you continuing? Why do you even care?

It shows the knowledge of Adam and how much control he had in the Garden.

God used part of the male to form the female to show that they were actually the same created being, two halves of a whole. The female was not created as a separate being, second to the male. She was formed as part of the initial man, in order to be a “helpmate” for the male. Eve was brought into being to strengthen and powerfully help the male, but she was made from the same “stuff,” and she was every bit as perfect a creation as man and every bit as patterned after God’s image and likeness.

I wonder is Adam had to teach her how to fish?

Not so my friend. What you need, no what you must understand is the person of Jesus Christ!!!!

That is what I had to do and so did everyone else.

What makes you think your opinion is so much better than mine that you can tell me 'what I need' and what I 'must understand'?

Who is 'everyone else'?

What is the general feeling here by the way, literal or not?

I am one who accepts what is written as literal unless it tells me that what said is a allegory or song or poem.

Personally, I am not smart to tell anyone what God meant to say. All I can do is accept what He did say.

Now, anyone with a little common sense knows that when the Bible says that "God is a rock".......that is NOT a literal comment.

You know, the more I see your comment it becomes clearer and clearer that you are so wrapped up in philosophy that you are un-able to see the answer when it hits you in the face.

It was one said by Dr. J. Vernon McGee that Philosophy is like looking for a black cat, in a room painted black, with the lights turned off. Reading your comments reminded me of that comment. No matter what is said, you come up with another question that means nothing and answers nothing.

Everything broached to you comes back in the form of another question and that question makes no more sense than the first one asked, and around and around we go in that black room.

I did not say my opinion is much or any better than yours is.

I said.................

That was a nice way of telling you that YOU just like me and everyone else needs to come to Christ and accept Him as Savior because YOU and I are sinners and need to be saved. Until we understand that, we will not be able to understand anything nand we will wind up going in circles like you have been doing now for 41 pages.

He decided to rest then? So he didn't need a rest but wanted to anyway.

The bible says in Hebrews 4:1-13:
1Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.a 3Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said

“So I declared on oath in my anger,‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”bAnd yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”c 5And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”

6Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, 7God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice do not harden your hearts.”d

8
For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,e just as God did from his. 11Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience. 12For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account"

This is speaking of the difference between those who hear God's voice and become believers (and you can refer back to post 721 where I wrote about spiritual hearing) and those who listen to God's voice and do not spiritually hear and thus remain unbelievers. This hearing can be through written word as well which is what we have on this forum.

So anyway, those who hear spiritually will enter God's rest, this is abiding in the Spirit of God which is ceasing from their own works and now living in the finished work of Christ which is His death to pay for sins, his burial which buries a believer's sin self by faith, and Christ's resurrection which raises a believer by faith into Christ's perfection and righteousness. Christ's finished work on the cross allows the believer to be indwelt with His Holy Spirit.

"When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit" (John 19:30).

Today do not harden your heart for those who don't enter God's rest and cease from their own works will be judged by their own works.

The works that are true and good done from a believer are those done from a believing resting and abiding in Christ by faith, thus following God's will by faith in God.

"Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30"For My yoke is easy and My burden is light" (Matthew 11:30).

"Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me" (John 15:4).

This fruit as said before is the fruit of the Holy Spirit and the believer bears this fruit by faith.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23).

So by being in God's rest the believer bears fruit.

Tubby Tubby, you have a way of clouding the truth don't you. God purposed to give man dominion over all the Earth, animals included. Why would he then over rule man's oversight by stepping in and doing the naming Himself??
