Don't miss how satan works in these verses.
The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” (Genesis 3:1 NLT)
He plants doubt.
“It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’” (Genesis 3:3 NLT)
But the lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” (Genesis 2:16, 17 NLT)
Notice the differences. Eve left out "freely," she has already lost gratitude. Then "you will die/lest you die," where God says you are sure to die. The doubt is growing.
“You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. (Genesis 3:4 NLT)
Then a lie, from the father of all lies.
As for a talking snake, Satan is the master of posing himself as something else and not tempting someone with his full identity exposed.
