Lets Make Fun Of The Clown Thread

It was definitely not a subject for me being a newer Christian. I'm just starting to dive into all the new vocabulary and views on scripture and to be honest that thread was really odd. The OP and the one after that should have been good enough. It just gave me a headache to read after that

It gave us all a headache after the first few pages for one reason or another. More and more, I'm beginning to think that some of these topics just should be allowed to go more than a page or two. They always seem to devolve into a cycle of frustration.

I'm a pastor in the Church of the Nazarene. My roots are largely Wesleyan/Armenian as a result. I grew up in a Baptist school, and I'm fairly comfortable with Southern Baptists and various other branches. We've had moderators from nearly every denomination imaginable, and we have all generally gotten along pretty well. I've made a few furrows into discovering what some others believe, as for me that is where I gain value in this site. I like to see how others see my God. I like to see His face through your eyes. However, most of those attempts have lead to proselytizing and arguing. As my intention was just to understand how others reconcile what either sounds contradictory to me, or simply doesn't conform to a vision I can really formalize, I tend to be disappointed in the results.

There is one of those churches in my area. I've been meaning to check it out.

You know.. in the book of James it talks about what God considers to be true religion thats pleasing to Him. I wonder if he put that in there because he knew all his people would be arguing back and forth about specifics?

I started laughing when you said it gave you a headache, especially seeing your avatar. I pictured you reading the word Annihilationism and then holding your head saying owe owe owe

There was a time several years ago when I was very depressed, very suicidal, very desperate. If I had for a moment believed in Annihilationism, that would have been the end of it for me. In fact, I genuinely PLEADED that would be the truth. Even now, the idea isn't a deterrent of any kind for me. If the end of my life is the end, then why would I even care. It's not like I'd have the ability to regret or feel bad about it. It would just be over and done with. In the end, we can't form our beliefs around desire for a reward or fear of a punishment. It's the life you live that you are accountable for, and that's what really counts.

We should have a rep system. And what the rep system could do, is if one of our brothers or sisters starts to get out of line, we all start sending them negative rep. Then when you get so many negative rep points it blocks you from that thread, or blocks you from the whole site for a day or so, so that that person can calm down and come back when they are more relaxed. And if a person gets so many neg rep points overall then they get perm banned. or the system could also give positive rep points, so if we see that the person is making an effort to do right, then they are further away from getting the perm ban.

The differences in our beliefs are really fairly petty in the end. As much as Armenian seems to completely oppose Calvinism, if you look at it closely, the more extreme you get in one, the closer you start getting to the other. It really is a minor jump. I follow what I believe because that's what I can most easily reconcile with Scripture. Even if I'm wrong, and the Calvinists are completely right, it will literally make no difference whatsoever. I don't do what I do because of my denomination, I chose my denomination because it best fits what I understand from the Bible. I believe the same is true for the Baptists, Presbyterians, Pentecostal, Episcopalians, and Catholics around the world.

Now I'M getting a headache. I tried this on another forum once. It was bad....really, really bad.

Me and a friend were talking about the difference between calvinism and armenian, and we both agreed it's better not to argue with people about the subject, because it doesn't help spiritual growth. In the end I'm sure a calvinist still believes an armenian will go to heaven and an armenian still believes a calvinist will go to heaven. They just believe the reason is different?

For the most part, we agree on the reason. In fact, all mainstream Christians believe in the same reason. The difference is really about how much choice we actually have in the matter. The real funny thing about it is, most Calvinists completely misrepresent what Armenians believe, and visa versa. There are also various levels of each, not to mention the various offshoots. I'd have to look it up, but there are actually 5 main branches of Christianity in the end. Every denomination falls into one of those 5 categories, but we all agree on the basics really. Only a few don't, and largely we look at those as cults or sects or something "not really Christian" (generally JW, Mormon, and WBC).

Even I got to know about that yesterday evening.. Does anyone know any reason? Should we ask mods and see if they can let him in again?

I have a headache from reading it. I mean how can I learn the word of God if the translation in my bible is off? I feel discouraged. What versions y'all recommend? I have the KJV. I would like for Mitspa to return too.....

Just remember that the "translation issues" are largely minor ones and do not affect anything regarding your Salvation. The entire discussion boils down to trying to figure out some of the possible details regarding how the Bible talks about Hell (for lack of a better term). It's really just persnickety stuff. Read whichever version of the Bible that is easiest for you to read. If you feel the need to go to the "next level" in your study of Scripture, there are a few different philosophies about that. My current favorite is NASB, but I tend to grab several versions and compare them when I study a passage.

Thanks.

Stickied for us usually means we are concerned about the topic and are looking at moderating it. It's not the only reason we sticky, but that's usually why.

Also, I set Mitspa's ban to temporary. He will be allowed back tomorrow.

Ah, good to know. I was only curious, since I still haven't read the thread :)

I'd say not to bother at this point. There was SOME interesting information in there, but it got derailed so often, the amount of useful information is pretty well buried, not that any of it was really all that important anyway.
