Best Ear Piercing Method: Gun Or Needle?

Gun or needle, best ear piercing method?

Now, now. The rules apply to everyone, unless you have now decided that you want this topic to be a discussion about the appropriateness of piercing. As the topic creator, that is up to you, but I don't think that is what you want. I cannot and will not enforce the topic discussion if the OP doesn't. It isn't fair to hold one side of the debate back just so the other side can throw pot shots.

I guess what I mean is, back to the old trusted needle or awl (that has been used since Old Testament times)... :)

Blessings.

No, I have not voted. I don't really have an opinion on which method is best for getting your ears pierced, mine are not.
Most of the rest of me has been pierced though, farming accidents, multiple surgeries, sword fighting mistakes (really), have left me with an assortment of various holes (which have largely just left big scars). I have 4 tattoos, but these are just dots used to aim a radiation source for radiation treatment for cancer.

Sorry about your need for cancer treatment. Hope you'll be well soon.

The cancer treatments were 7 years ago, but I got to keep the little dot tattoos. As my surgeon says "we haven't killed you yet." He has a wonderfully morbid sense of humor.

...it seems like everyone who had it done (professionally) with a needle, seems to rave about how much better that is. Mine all closed up after 3 years the first time I took them out for more than 8 hours, so perhaps that's a vote against guns?

PS:

Banarenth: Interesting, so how did you rate the experience of keeping all your gun pierced holes filled almost continuously for 3 years? I guess you didn't just keep them filled while they healed; you must have wanted the studs in all the time, like they were 'part of you', I guess.

Blessings.

I never took them out for three years except to switch to bigger studs, I stretched them up to 10 AWG IIRC, mostly in the hopes that they wouldn't close up if they were big enough. Then I took them out for a few hours a day when I moved to a job that didn't allow them in all the time. Finally, I had to have them out for a full 8 hour day and the first time I did that, they closed up on me. All of them. The cartilage piercing actually closed up the first time I took the earring out for more than an hour. But, you also need to understand that I heal really, really fast. Like just short of Wolverine fast. It sometimes gets a bit creepy since I've cut myself more than once and couldn't figure out where the cut was because it healed before I even saw the blood. My doctor sent me to a hematologist because of it but I haven't gotten the results back yet.

Banarenth:

Interesting! I think you may find actually that most gun piercing studs are about 20 or 18 gauge. If the piercer uses a needle and goes to, say, 16 gauge straightaway, the first rings can become more thoroughly embedded in more permanent holes, I guess.

I myself am pretty comfortable with the idea of men with earrings in all the time: and the thicker gauge studs or rings are rather rugged-looking often, anyway. (Just as rugged-looking earrings can look good on men, so also - by way of an equivalent comparison, I suppose, there are many tattoo designs that look entirely approrpriate on women. It's best not to get into syndromes similar to trying to ban women who wear bluejeans, etc. - men with earrings, or whatever - from church membership, as sometimes happened many decades ago.)

(Two cents'.)

Blessings.

The gun they used took the actual earrings and forced them through my ears. I think they were probably 18 or 20 AWG. Either way, whatever statement I was trying to make has been made. If the holes didn't close, I'd probably have fun with them from time to time, but I don't have any compelling reason to go through the effort or minor expense to redo them now.

When I had my ear pierced, it was a straight case of a few of us having drunk too much, a girl using sewing needle and a lighter to get it hot and me being willing to volunteer... I did have a stud for a few months but that's years (30+) ago.

I'm not sure that needles in themselves scare me but medical associations with them do. I had a nurse today trying to get some blood out of me for liver function tests. In jest (and trying to take my mind of things) I called him a vampire...

Added... Just a correction. It was a safety pin not a sewing needle

Banarenth:

Yes, it can be innocent fun and personally I'm think that if man with a clear conscience wants to go for it, he should. (After all, Christian women these days don't seem to be inhibited in getting a bit of tattooing done, either.)

To make sure the holes stay open and big enough, some ppl ask the piercer to use a scalpel: might sound a bit drastic and I think it can be over-done, as well, but if the person wants to make sure there is enough of a hole so that it won't close up, a bit of scalpeling might be the answer.

Blessings.

...

jonbanjo: Leaving aside the drink bit, do you really regret having had it done?

I guess it's a phase, for some ppl more permanent than others, anyway.

farouk, I don;t think a stud would have been right for me.

It's difficult with phases of life. I drifted through a few including wannabe biker, some form of hippy (maybe as I play folk music), respectable white collar worker (that was the state of my life before I looked at Christianity - had the job title "manufacturing systems co-ordinator" or something like that while working for a major white goods co. and thought I had life on track) but I drift...

Whether a stud is right for someone else, my current thinking is only that person will know.

jonbanjo: I can certainly empathize with you in your finding the truth of the Bible, by God's grace, for your life!

You're right that an ear stud or two is an individual thing. Like for example, if a son or grandson of yours got the habit of wearing one, I guess it would be hard for you to resent it, especially since you once wore one for a short while, at least.

Blessings.
