Hmmm...I think Elijah and Enoch.

Rev 11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
Rev 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
Rev 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
Rev 11:5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
Rev 11:6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
Rev 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
Rev 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
Rev 11:9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
Rev 11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
Rev 11:11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
Rev 11:12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.
Rev 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.
Rev 11:14 The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.

Elijah and Enoch seem to be the popular guess of choice-the truth is we don't know. We can speculate and infer but we don't have clear biblical authority to tell us who they will be. Yet another mystery and wonder of God yet to be fulfilled. They could be being 'raised' now in our day and we don't have a clue...

I believe it will be NONE OF THE ABOVE.

IMO it will be two humans who are alive today and will have the power that reminds us of the Old Test. men but will be their own man.

Many have insisted that Elijah must be one of the Two Witnesses because he was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind and did not experience death. Hebrews 9:27 teaches that it is appointed unto men once to die. They contend that Elijah’s required death will be accomplished when he dies as one of the Two Witnesses.
There is a glaring flaw in this logic. Scripture teaches that the saved on earth at the time of the rapture will never see death. I Corinthians 15:51-54 tells us that we shall not all sleep (die), but that we shall all be changed from mortal to immortality at the last trump. Once we are immortal, we will certainly not be able to come back later and die. If we don’t have to come back to die after the rapture, then Elijah certainly doesn’t have to come back and die either.

I would suggest they may be someone completely new that act in a similar manner, just as John the Baptizer did with Elijah. Two completely new witnesses, as God often does things this way. We don't see him recycle prophets from the Old Testament anywhere else.
If it is Moses or John the Baptist that would indicate reincarnation and that is no where in the Scriptures.

It is all speculation...but I don't see that this stops us from wondering...and I also think we can't vote it to make it so. But maybe it makes us think.

Elijah -

2Ki_1:10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
2Ki_1:12 And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

He called down fire from heaven.

Mal_4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

As for "reincarnation" - did not Christ say just after the transfiguration that Elias/Elijah had come as John the Baptist?

Mat 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
Mat 17:2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
Mat 17:3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.
Mat 17:4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
Mat 17:5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
Mat 17:6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.
Mat 17:7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.
Mat 17:8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.
Mat 17:9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.
Mat 17:10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?
Mat 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
Mat 17:12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
Mat 17:13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

Another verse from Matthew:
Mat_11:14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

And the rest of the NT:
Mat_27:47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
Mat_27:49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
Mar_6:15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.
Mar_8:28 And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.
Mar_9:4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
Mar_9:5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
Mar_9:11 And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?
Mar_9:12 And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.
Mar_9:13 But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.
Mar_15:35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.
Mar_15:36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.
Luk_1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
Luk_4:25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
Luk_4:26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
Luk_9:8 And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
Luk_9:19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
Luk_9:30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
Luk_9:33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
Luk_9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
Joh_1:21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
Joh_1:25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
Rom_11:2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying,

Jas_5:17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

And let's not forget Elijah stopped the rain.
Just saying.....

I don't know who the witnesses will be but Elijah and Enoch never died physically. Moses did die as scripture says but I don't necessarily think that would cause God a problem to resurrect them. I find it more difficult to fathom 2 new witnesses, growing up on the brink of tribulation but again -IDK.

I forgot the two olive tree OT references:

1Ki_6:32 The two doors also were of olive tree; and he carved upon them carvings of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold, and spread gold upon the cherubims, and upon the palm trees.
Zec_4:3 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.
Zec_4:11 Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof?
Rev_11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

I think the popular choices are below,

Elijah and Moses - The power of these 2 witness mentioned in revelation points directly to the mighty miracles performed by them. They also represent the prophets and law directly. They continued to be involved in redemption history. Them being there in the mount of transfiguration is a clear indication that they were not done yet. That event really makes me feel it would be Elijah and Moses.

Elijah and Enoch - They never had physical death. How come a person get into heaven without a physical death is something no can answer. So people reset to saying the are the 2 witness who will come and go through physical death

Irrespective of who it is, my belief is that we are not going to be there. As I understand, it would be after rapture.

I agree, Rav, that we won't be here :):):) (yipeeee!!!) and I think the witnesses would have to be from Jewish roots because they are there in Jerusalem (suddenly appear?) and they are there for the remnant and obviously bring them to Christ. I was listening to someone (Stone?) who indicated that he thought it was going to be Elijah and Enoch. He also indicates that the 42 months they are here will be when the 3rd Temple is built. He said that the rededication & cleansing would take that long according to scripture. I didn't vote yet and now I wish I had included 2 unknowns as a choice in the poll (dang!!!) In any event, I wouldn't think they would announce who they are/were to begin with anyways. I agree also about Moses being a top choice. They have a TV series in the US called Sleepy Hollow and the 2 witnesses are a resurrected Ichabod Crane and a black female police officer. (Rofl - sure isn't what I get from scripture). Still - unless someone knows Hebrew - I don't see the witnesses as gender identified. I suppose that's why I included 2 women. The witnesses are slain but are resurrected.

I believe it will be NONE OF THE ABOVE.

I can get behind that. I think when it comes to the future, all humans have an impulse to reach (and passionately defend!) conclusions based on what we know about, but I expect it turns out that the vast majority of events happen because of things that we don't know about.

BUT..........Israel did not accept Christ at His 1st coming!!!!
If they had accepted Christ then He would have established the KIngdom immediately and John would have been Elijah.

In Matthew 17, Jesus IMO is trying to forestall the argument that Jesus had to die on the cross because John the Baptist was not Elijah and Elijah has to come before Christ returns to set up the Kingdom.

Huh? It was also predicted that the Jews would reject Christ (some - not all). None-the-less, 144,000 (12k) from each tribe will be the remnant and will be brought to salvation in end times.

Matt 17 clearly indicated that Elijah was expected to return and Christ says he did - as John the Baptist.

144,000 are still in the future Silk and do not fit into Matt. 17.

The key to Elijah comiong was that Isreal had to have accepted Christ as Messiah when He presented Himself to them and they did not do that and in fact KILLED HIM.

Matt. 17:12
"But I say unto you, That Elias IS COME ALREADY AND THEY KNEW HIM NOT........".

I was responding to your comment about reincarnation as not possible because Moses is reported in scripture to have had mortal death. IF Elijah had come as the Baptist than Elijah would also have experienced mortal death. The cutting off of the head seems to be a perrenial thing that the Adversary does, eh? We are talking about the 2 witnesses and end of days - and they are there for the remnant of Israel. Whoever the two witnesses may be - I would guess that their appearance is miraculous and of God.

But I have to say that it easily understandable to me that if the rapture happens pretrib - ancient Jewish prophets would have the full story of Christ (they did not reject Him) and more credibility with Jews today. Their job is to gather the remnant and the miraculous validate who they are - from God. I guess a few more names could be added to the list; Daniel, Isaiah, Zechariah...

This is the right answer.

The error comes when we assign gifts to a person, and not credit the author who is the Holy Spirit. Paul also healed some, but that did not make his name Jesus. To say Elijah did this and in Rev 11 they did this, so it must be Elijah is a very strange way to look at scriptures.

All power given to all men came though the Holy Spirit, not the man.

We are never told to figure out who the two Wittnessess are, but they will be believers on earth from the present time. Nobody is leaving the presence of God to do more Work on Earth until we all gather with Jesus for the final battle.

I started the thread to discuss the passages - not so much to actually determine who the 2 witnesses will be. In discussing the possibilities, it is an opportunity to learn and talk about end days. I regret that I didn't think to add 2 slots for unknown. Altho, I do think it will be two former biblical figures, as previously mentioned.

Oh.. and I forgot (@Major) according to scripture - the 2 witnesses are slain and lay in the streets for 3 days and then are resurrected. Just sayin' that the argument of those who haven't experienced death still holds kinda. But aside from 2 unknowns (which for all I know is correct) who would you choose as a past biblical figure and why? What do you see as the purpose of the 2 witnesses at that place and time?

PS: Welcome to CFS, @By Faith :)

Well, it would have to be two that have not died physically then. Man is apointed to die once then judgement. Ecc says that man will die and have no more part under the sun. So it would have to be two that have not died to keep in line with the rest of the scriptures.

An angel preaches the gospel in Revelation also, not any of us is mentioned or the church with the Work of the Holy Spirit, so it may possibly be two angels sent to wittness as they are messengers. For me it just makes more sense to say two believers yet to be determined at this time. However, the time of the end will be a crazy time, so that is also just speculation.

I don't think so sister.

Their being slain at the 3 1/2 year mark simply follows Hebrews 9:24.............
"It is appointed once for man to die then the judgment".

These two men are right where God has appointed them doing what He wants them to do and when they have do it.......God allows them to be slain.

BUT.......because they are "Witness of God", what greater witness could there be than the world watching them rise from the dead and ascend to heaven on world wide TV!!!

It also seems to me that their death may well happen in connection with the Abomination Of Desolation when the A/C stands in the same temple these two men preached from and claims to be God . (2 Thess. 2:3-4).

Who would I choose. I think it is clear that these two men will be new men, Jews who are saved by God immediately at after the Rapture and they will come in the power and ability of Moses and Elijah. They will not be Moses and Elijah but they will have the same kind of tendencies and abilities IMO.

Moses = Law.
Elijah = The Prophets.
