New wine vs old.
I prefer new wine..which is fresh grapes, not fermented.
Anglican serve port as their wine in communion services and I cant handle it, its very sour to me and got alcohol in it. Gives me a headache. I dont know what catholics serve, but if it is alcohol I cannot partake.

To be fair, a lot of parishes only serve the Eucharist in bread form, though the blood is present in wine form as well. Some people don't like the taste of course when they do receive, but they recognize that how it tastes isn't the point.

If we're just talking personal taste, I like simple Welch's concord grape juice over wine. I'm a fairly simple person. For the liturgy, it will never be used.

Its is not just personal taste..although thats part of it, I just cannot handle alcohol, and would not drink it even if laced with heaps of sugar or mixed with something else. also God doesnt want me drinking it.

I dont know that some churches just serve the bread...what, they cant find grape juice so they just dont serve it? Ok. Well, its not really an issue cos I can find new wine and unleavened bread at the supermarket. I dont need to go to a church once a month to have communion with the Lord. I can eat and drink to remember him everyday.

This is something that so many denominations differ on. For instance, Anglicans will use wine while UCC use grape juice, and each denomination has a reason for why they do. Thomas Bramwell Welch (yes, THAT Welch) was a prohibitionist and a dentist and wanted to use a non-fermented/non-alcoholic version to replace wine. This spread quickly within some Protestant denominations while others felt it was disrespectful.

Only speaking from the Catholic position, no substitutions are permitted by canon law. It cannot be juice, it can't be wine from a different berry or fruit -- the valid form of the blood is only to be grape wine. The simple reason for this is because of its Biblical significance. But there long-winded explanations for it which I won't even begin to get into -- it will turn into a whole different subject. I'm happy to discuss that privately though.

Only speaking from the Catholic position (again, this is just the position -- I'm not making an argument with this),

After all, the Lords prayer says daily bread.

Indeed it does. The Lord's Prayer is a prayer which many Christians today even hold disagreement over regarding so much of its meaning. For the most part, there's an overall understanding and agreement of it, but lines like "Give us this day our daily bread," for some refers to blessings of food. Certainly there is nothing wrong with this prayer, though many other Christians recognize this line as Christ, whether through the Eucharist or some other means.

Your church sounds very rigid. Sorry.

I have never heard of any churches drinking anything but wine using the fruit of grapes as the blood of Jesus. Its because it is red which represents his blood.
I.e they wouldnt use white grapes. I suppose if no grapes were available, you could use tomato juice or cranberry as its fruit from a vine and red. The Lord knows that you want to remember Him anyway, and honors that. I cant imagine him being so fussy and rigid that he would impose laws about it.

I mean Ribena.
I think cranberry comes from a tree. Blackcurrant is red. Children love it. I cant imagine Jesus givng children alcoholic wine to drink. That would just be WRONG. Children can take communion too.

Of course you are welcome to believe as you wish, I will say this isn't a case of being rigid or legalistic. It's for the sake of showing reverence for our Lord.

But again, let's not get into that, Lanolin. I was only explaining the belief, not trying to convince you, just as you're not trying to convince me of you position.

When Communion is given and it is offered in the form of wine, it won't be consumed gulp after gulp to get drunk. A sip is taken which no one (even me--a serious lightweight) couldn't get drunk off of. But that's only when it's in the form of wine. The most common representation of the Eucharist and ALWAYS offered form is in the form of the bread.

Christ wouldn't want children, or anyone for that matter, to get drunk. That is another subject. Although we're not talking about drunkenness. But if we were, you'd be absolutely right -- I would agree with that.

Communion though is a huge blessing for children who come into the understanding of the faith.

I got a headache from one sip. It affects me really badly. Even half a glass. I cannot handle and get hangover from. I didn't know they would serve alcohol at those churches, but now I know, I don't go to them.

People say you build a tolerance for alcohol cos nobody really likes the taste anyway. Most people drink for the intoxicating effects that I know. Only wine snobs would drink it for the taste, and you'd have to be really rich to be a wine snob, cos it's so expensive.

At most churches they serve the new wine in little thimble size cups, even smaller than a shot glass, so it's not like anybody is being irreverent and gulping it down. This is so it can be shared with everyone who comes and believes..not cos they stingy.

Did you go up for communion in a Catholic church? Granted, I understand that you didn't know and you weren't trying to be disobedient, but whoever brought you had a responsibility to keep you from going up to receive.

I remember the little shots.

Here is an excerpt from I Corinthians Ch 11 (NIV)

27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.

33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. 34 Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment.

I think it is clear here that this congregation served alcoholic wine. It was so much that it caused members to become intoxicated. Verse 30 seems to talk about communicants staggering, throwing up, and dozing, although I have heard it said that this was more a statement of their general health suffering, even unto death.

Verse 34, I would offer, is advice that when one is to receive this sacrament that it should be done with food already in the stomach, so that the effect of the wine will be lessened.

I would also offer that Verse 32 shows that the unpleasant effects of being intoxicated should be taken by the believer bas correction by the Lord and an expression of His love.

Actually, most (not all) of the congregations where I have taken communion have used grape-juice. One church also went so far as to use wafers that were gluten free because of the intolerance of some individuals.

Wow, sorry for the rant :p I could actually go on about my anger with certain bishops, priests, nuns, etc. They are supposed to be servants leading people to God for the sake of their souls, but a lot of them have done nothing but caused confusion.

Sounds like a good time to forgive them and pray for God to bless them, and help them become more like He is.
Blessings to you!

I would say whoever serves alcoholic wine in their church is being completely irresponsible and not discerning.
As for gluten..its clear that much food is adulterated these days and become toxic to our bodies.

No, i have never been to communion in a catholic church. This was anglican they invite everyone...i just wouldnt set foot in a catholic church cos i am not catholic, and they wouldnt let you anyway, so dont worry. God didnt want me to go anyway, cos I did have a catholic friend who invited me to a mass, but when go there it was too late and it was over, so, yea. I have no desire to commune in a church that doesnt want me there anyway. Sorry if that sounds harsh but thats my experience.

Many asians cannot physically handle alcohol in their bodies..have a special gene that reacts with it really badly. But then many other people cannot handle it either...and those that claim they do, are just in denial.

I'm confused. I understand if you don't want to step foot in a Catholic Church -- I don't want to step foot in certain churches myself. But what do you mean "they wouldn't let you in"? That sounds a little nutty.

Some people have trouble with the wine, like perhaps you do, which is why when they receive communion, they only receive the body and not the blood. But while you may find it irresponsible, we regard this as sacred. The use of grape wine isn't an arbitrary choice. It derives from ancient use and that's why it has never been changed and cannot be changed -- even if the majority of clergy wanted to change it, through don't have that kind of authority. Just as the bread couldn't be substituted with potatoes.

Reading the kjv it is clear the passage is not about being drunk. I dont know your version but you quoting out of context.
It is about people who do not wait for each other having a meal..some go hungry while others have already eaten.

Why would God use alcohol to judge people. That makes no sense.
