What bible translation do you read and why?

New English Translation is that of dynamic equivalence, or thought-for-thought, as opposed to strict word-for-word translation.

Overall, the New English Translation is a very good Bible translation. Its free availability and unlimited usage is something other translations should learn from. The NET sometimes is a little too dynamic in its renderings, delving into interpretation rather than simple translation. At the same time, the NET is more formal than most of the other English Bible translations that are considered dynamic.
I I am a big fan of not the translation, but of the textuak notes and comments, as thnose are worth the price of that Bible!
Thanks. When I searched for English bible translations then I saw the NET. With its many footnotes and going into detail and at the same time trying to stay very literal I had the impression that it is simliar to the Elberfelder Bible. But because I am not able to really estimate the validity and acceptance of an English translation, I did not further read it.
OK, since you write that it is fine, I will use this translation in future. I think I will try to purchase a hardcopy.

If you buy Net bible, make sure to bet version with all of the commentary and textual notes!

The NET translation is good because you can access it right over the NET. I think it is important to use the footnotes as well.

I obtained the Polyglot Bible a couple of years ago. The fonts are really tiny and there are side by side versions and other notes on each page of Scripture. I'm still learning and plan to read it in its entirety on January 1, 2022. See the attached.

I like bilingual bibles.
Though I am the opposite and value the Bible more for scripture than the notes and commentaries. I prefer the Bible without all those extras, just plain scripture. I know they can be helpful, but I find them distracting. Usually when I am reading the Bible I want to read through the entire passage than have to constantly stop and look up a note or commentary, of someone else's interpretation usually. I think books lose the reader when they insert too many of those extra side topics, footnotes and margin bars.

Certainly when you are reading out loud or in the middle of story, you don't want to go back and explain a sentence. Or it will take forever to get to the end.

There is a difference between Bible reading and Bible study. In both cases I do read for understanding, but in study I tend to take a more intense look at words, context and like to bring other scriptures. For me study is when I look more closely at what is said.

When reading, I strive to understand the big picture, the movement of events, the overall message being taught, the examples being used. Understanding the characters and events supersedes understanding of details and words.

When I read the bible, it is nice to have a Bible free of excess clutter easy to read. When I'm studying the Bible, good references can be useful, notes that I have added come in handy, a primary translation is desirable and many other references can be useful depending on the type of study, topic of study and questions that I might develop in my study.

I have a separate Bible study book if I am studying the Bible, and write things down in a notebook.
A friend gave me a Bible thats got wide enough margins in it to write in, so I have written a few notes in there. But those notes probably won't mean anything to anyone else except for me.

Writing notes during Bible study or a sermon seems to be a lost art. I feel writing things down helps with memorization.

You should see my Bibles.

I have kept them until the front and backs wear off. My grandchildren have already placed there names on my old Bibles as they are all full of RED markers where I have made notes when the Spirit spoke to me or I was listening to a teaching class or a sermon or a song.

I got into the habit of drawing a line under the Scripture, making a note and then putting in the date.

If I was studying I used to read one verse and mark it in red with the reference of the next verse I had picked. Every study was marked with a different colour and I would write the name of the study in that colour. I am still hopeless at remembering chapter and verse

I remember scripture wording, but don't worry to much about memorizing the location. Instead I make notes in my Bible that quickly help me to locate them. Over the years I have used various color schemes and now primarily resort to notes.

Hello Cosia;

I feel there is a difference between reading/studying Scripture versus memorizing Scripture. I find by reading we reveal the Scriptures more and remember them in the application of our daily living.

Memorizing and then quoting verses is good. One of my friends has a 40 year ministry of reciting the Gospels, Christmas Advent and Revelation all by memory in a church or venue presentation setting.

Wow that is inspiring.
I just cannot remember chapter verse l have tried to many many times
Now that I have to listen to the bible on cd I find I remember whereabouts they are but not exactly where.

I don't remember every single chapter and verse numbers either. It's God who remembers that for me.
It would be like remembering all the page numbers or URLs, or barcodes. I just don't have that kind of mind, though some people do. (and you wondering why I'm a librarian? I work with Dewey Decimal! arrgh. But I don't do original cataloguing...)

Some people can just look at a reference, like Job 20:3 and know exactly what it is. I can't do that I need to look it up!

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Regardless of language.
Each discerns (penetrates to) the Truth differently. It depends on what veils (denials) have we placed between the Truth and our consciousness.
We cannot receive anything with a fist of self importance.
The humble are more prepared to penetrate through their own fears to keep the Lamps of Truth in their consciousness.
