Polly, your life doesn't have to be boring! You need to look at each of the things you mentioned... we can determine which are godly and which are not.

Some of your wording sounds like you expect to be able to do whatever you want, but still say you are serving God. What about when God says NO to something you WANT to do? What then?

A man that struggles with porn, is probably similar to a man that struggles with being gay. I'm guessing the temptation will always be there, but it's about growing in self-control.

"Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."

So, will I ever get to Heaven then if I don't stop doing the things I like? :( I don't want to watch just Biblical movies and to listen Christian music only and to dress in casual clothes that cover and to read something else and to love someone who is not Severus...

Ha, ha. I hear ya! You should stop watching or listening to things that glorify sin. I don't only watch Christian movies and music. I have had to stop watching shows I really liked, but I find others that are okay. Can you give me an example?

Polly, God is going to keep working on you if you want Him to. You will find that you no longer LIKE certain things after awhile. I believe you are going to Heaven if you have accepted Jesus as your Savior. I believe you are to then go and sin no more the best you can. I can see you love God or you would not be worried about these things. Let Him work on you! None of us are perfect! I am still struggling with my sins. I mess up, too.

Because you say that my things are sins or sinful...

Polly, I am not naming specific things because I don't know what you watch, listen to, dress like... you say how you dress, but I've never seen it. I can tell you that when I was younger I dressed a way I probably shouldn't have and as I got older, I stopped wanting to and did better. I look for clothes that are still very cute, but not immodest. I wear skirts and dress cute, too! I like cute clothes!

Yeah but I would never imagine myself not being a Harry Potter fan, not loving Severus Snape, not listening to any music, and other things... It would be so boring...

But I still believe that people can watch anything as long as they don't mislead.

I don't agree with Harry Potter books and movies, but I can tell you I watched and read the Twilight series. I like it, but something was nagging me that it wasn't godly. Then Bella drank blood, and I felt sick in my stomach. I still own the books, but I haven't been able to read them since. The movies are sitting in my tv stand and I feel guilt about them. That is God convicting me. I ignored that at first, but it's still there. We all struggle. You have to choose to listen when you feel it.

You might think these things are not misleading, but they desensitize you to what sin is. That is what my experience has shown me, anyway.

Keep praying, Polly!

How about if I ask God by praying and see what answer I get... I know a lot of Christians who watch Harry Potter and they know it's okay.

You can't always compare to other Christians. I believe there are Christians who are out there to deceive. They say they are Christian, but doing ungodly things. Then, other Christians look and say it must be okay because so and so is doing it.

I completely agree that you should continue to pray to God about the things you do. Be careful to listen to God and not confuse it with what you are thinking is okay. Be aware that you may be desensitized to things.

I actually agree with this. The question is how do we know when we are being mislead? Then on the other side of the debate, at what point do we consider a film irredeemable, or at least unwatchable? At what point do we say it is wrong to participate in certain forms of entertainment? This is an interesting topic.

There is an article that touches on the subject, which to me makes a lot of sense. I'm curious what other christians think. Here is the article: http://thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/trevinwax/2014/01/06/evangelicals-and-hollywood-muck/

Okay. I guess my life is now over, no more anime fashion, no more Harry Potter, no more Severus Snape, no more anime, no more any music, etc... Is this what Christian life is supposed to be to enter Heaven? I don't want to have a boring life... :( I want to dress in anime fashion, read Harry Potter, watch anything, love Severus Snape, listen to any music... D:

Your life isn't over when you seek Christ, on the contrary, it's just beginning! I just got through Galatians and thought this was a great addition to our discussion:

Galatians 6 - Doing Good to All (this means yourself too!)

6 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently.
-- This what we're trying to do for you Polly

But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
-- In helping you we are also trying to watch out for ourselves so that we may not be tempted!

2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. 4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load. 6 Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.

7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Polly how about we start with some different scripture instead of talking about what we have talked about before. You came back to learn about the bible right? How about Isaiah 53:2-10. We never got to really discuss theses verses:

He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer.

Who do you think this is talking about Polly? Do you know?

Polly, you know that what you do can't save you right? That is why we are all gathered here, because we are thankful that God was willing to suffer everything to rescue us from our sins. Those of us who are saved on this site, are saved because of our faith in what God has done for us. You say you love God. What do you think about that?
