Pastor doesn't want members praying or reading bible together

Then you better take Romans 10:17 out of the Scriptures because it says that........
"Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God".
I don't need to take anything out of the Bible. Who do you suppose is the Word of God? What is his name? Jesus Christ, is the Word of God. Who proclaims him? We do which is were he lives inside his Church in all his Glory!!! We are his platform from where he speaks!

Where did the preacher get the Word of God before it was written in the Bible my brother?

How did man get saved before Christ?

What is it that is taught and heard and learned? The means or method by which God "calls'' or "draws'' all men is the Gospel. "And it was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." (II Thessalonians 2:14). There is no special, mystical anointing of the Holy Spirit, but rather, the Holy Spirit calls men through the gospel; and it is the gospel that is the power (Romans 1:16).

Where did Paul get his message? He receive it by direct revelation of Jesus Christ the Word of God. How did most if not all the saints of God get their faith from when there were no Bibles back then. Where did Abraham get his faith from? It came from the living, active Word of God that came directly to them by the Holy Spirit. Who preached the "Gospel" to Abraham before it was ever written down in the New Testament? It was God himself as the living active Word of God!!!

Gal 3:7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.
Gal 3:8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you shall all the nations be blessed."

This is exactly what I have been saying all along. There is a external part that we must seek which the Bible points to, his name is Jesus Christ the living active Word of God. He comes to live inside those who believe, and confess him as their Lord. No amount of reading God's Holy scriptures cause one to have life, but it can direct that person to the one who gives eternal life!

So sir if this is all you are saying - what is up with saying the scriptures are Not the word of God ?

If scripture were the living active Word of God then we would all know God by reading the Bible, which is not the case. I will say it again, why are there million of people who know the scriptures, but have no clue who God is?

Those millions you speak of are those who are too busy with their own wills and lives, and are unwilling to desire to change who they are by answering the "Knock".

20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Fits well with: Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?

Remember "those who have ears to hear, let them hear". Those too busy or concerned about other things don't have ears that can hear what they should hear. So when they read and process the scriptures, all they get is good philosophy, and a world view that doesn't agree with their world view. So then this gets dumped into the void which contains everything else they have no use for.

Romans 1:
21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

Brother I am retired. I can do anything I want at any time. Its fun!!! :)
yep but dont go complaining your board all the time. I did that one summer. I will not ever do that again. I kept complaining that actors on tv had a more of a life then mine and so forth.

I had a power crain truck - to BIG to license for the street just for job to base use me for a parking brake between him and a car in front of me. Squeezed my truck like an acordian.

I got caught up with some lightning as it hit the phone line which was grounded into the pipes and as I reached over this old metal bed to put a lawn chair on the radiator in the flooded basement - yee haw I was connected. Left a foot ball shape burn on my tummy as big as a grape fruit.

Was out in my canoe with out riggers and about 800 dollars of new equioment when this evil storm came through the area. Sent waves 3 feet higher then the sides of the canoe and rain so hard I could not see the front of the canoe and wind so strong my electric motor would not even make a dent.

Rangers parked their trucks on the bluff and shined their lights out to no avail. Got the boat beached a few hundred feet from the dam rock walls. Lightning was hitting the ground all around me and I climbed the bluff and hid in the womans bathroom. That storm brought the tornado that tore up newton falls ohio.

No sir - I have never complained since. ;)
Blessings

I will say it as many times as you say this. Gods word is set up that way. It takes His spirit to unlock it. It is still the word of God and is still alive.

This may be true and yet it does not make scriptures anything less then the written word of God which ccw is saying.

I was only answering CCW's question:
I will say it again, why are there million of people who know the scriptures, but have no clue who God is?
My answer did not infer nor assert that the scriptures were anything less than the written word of God. What I did assert was that the scriptures are the written word of God, and yet people can study them without having a change of heart.

Matt. 7:13-14.........
"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."

Bible knowledge is excellent and yes millions have read the Bible. However, without the Holy Spirit's conviction of sin in a sinners life, that sinner can not understand what he is reading.

Matthew 7:23 ............"And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

Religious but lost. Well read but not conviced by the Holy Spirit.

A group of 4-5 of us in our church catch up regularly and do mini bible studies by reading the Word and talking about it, followed by a time of prayer.

Recently I told the pastor about this great time and they said they don't want people catching up in this way outside of church. This is incase false doctrine is discussed. I'm quite confused because I thought that catching up reading the Word and praying together would be exactly what the church would encourage!

What are people's thoughts. I believe in authority and submission. I also believe that this is ridiculous to be honest. Is here scripture or any thoughts on this issue? If a pastor discourages people from meeting like this, does his "command" apply in a Biblical way? Thoughts?
I have had pastors act jealously of my using my bible as a reference while he was preaching. i could not understand this.

Yep, I can relate to that. I, being a retired electrician I seen a lot of shocking things, not only to myself, but to other people. Who says you can not believe in something you can not see!

That's OK, you are just saying that there is something more than just scripture to bring a person to Christ.
